Clarke groaned and opened her eyes, immediately squinting them again as a harsh light washed over her.
"Clarke?" A worried voice sounded to the left of her head. She couldn't tell who it was coming from; the fog surrounding her thinking hadn't worn off enough to think clearly.
A scuffle of chairs told Clarke the owner of the voice wasn't the only visitor. She steeled herself and opened her eyes again, this time moving her head around to glimpse the faces surrounding her. Harper and Monroe sat to her left, while Bellamy and Octavia sat to her right. Madam Pomfrey stood with her hands on her hips at the foot of the bed. The hospital wing.
Clarke only wondered for a second what she was doing in the hospital wing before the events of the night came crashing in. Escaping the house, crash landing in Hogsmeade, and trekking back to Hogwarts with Em. Clarke assumed her exhaustion had landed her here, but she was glad her friends had come to visit, even if it was a bit strange that they had watched her while she slept.
"Finn had class and had to leave, but he's been here all morning. Wells wanted to come, too, but... he has other things going on. We were worried about you Clarke," Harper said. While her eyes remained fierce, Clarke could tell she was shaken up.
Monroe placed a subtle hand on Harper's knee. The gesture set Clarke's heart aching. She and Lexa had never been given the chance to be soft and comforting. Their relationship--is that what it was?-- had been a whirlwind of secrets and half answers, running, and things way beyond their years as students. And now Lexa lay at the mercy of the enemy. Clarke refused to think of anything worse.
"What happened after Hogsmeade?" Bellamy's voice was gentle, but an edge snuck into his words. His bruised eyes and weary tone showed he had been worried and unable to sleep after their encounter with the Phoenix. Not that he would remember...
"I need you four to give my patient some space. Actually, make yourselves useful and fetch Headmaster Kane and Professor Roan. They wish to speak to Miss Griffin as soon as possible."
The four grumbled, but stood up, travelling as a pack to the door. Clarke watched them go, struggling to sit up against her pillows.
"I've always wondered when you'd get yourself in here, Miss Griffin." A tight lipped smile invaded Madam Pomfrey's face. "Your father always had some reason or another to get injured."
"You knew my father?"
"Wonderful young man. A little clumsy in his early years, downright daredevil in his later. But he always bought me flowers after a particularly rough patch-up." The tight lipped smile turned wistful.
Clarke's father had always bought flowers for her mother, too. Abby had told Clarke when she brought a bunch of flowers from the meadow near their home. Jake must have been a thoughtful man... Clarke wished she had had just a little while longer with her father.
"Two nights ago you came back to Hogwarts with a young woman named Emori, correct? She said she goes by Em. What do you remember after that?"
"Two nights ago? I can't have been asleep that long! We need to hurry, Lexa's still with the Phoenix!"
"Relax, Clarke. You went through a traumatic experience. You can't keep going once your body has decided to stop. To try to wake you up any sooner could have been catastrophic."
"Has the headmaster done anything to save her? Anything at all? Isn't there wizarding police that can go in there and get her?"
"Clarke, you're going to have to calm down or I will put you back to sleep so you don't overwork yourself." Madam Pomfrey's voice was quiet but Clarke knew her threat was sincere. She couldn't calm down, the thought of Lexa, alone and imprisoned for an extra day, made her skin crawl.
