At first, Allina could only hear the murmurs of speaking. Two clipped, halting voices: a woman's and a man's. The woman's voice soon turned plaintive, then loud shouting began. The odor of dry stone and burning paper grew stronger. Objects hit the walls; birds began to caw. Feet dragged on the floor.

All at once, it stopped.

The smell still hung in the air. Allina held her knees to her chest and didn't move for a long while.
