Whoever had broken into Alejandra's home hadn't bothered to close the door behind them. It stood ajar, letting in orange light. Already it was near sundown.
Allina sprinted outside and found herself in a no-man's-land. Behind her was the hill, covered in summer grass and delicate flowers. Behind the hill was Allina's town. But ahead of her? There was a deep forest, overgrown with vines and crawling with creatures. Beyond the forest, she couldn't say.
What she did know, however, was that one set of footprints led into the forest, and only one. The person had been dragged, but by whom, Allina didn't know.
Allina looked up at the trees. They looked as if they'd stood for many hundreds of years; human hands had barely touched the forest that stood before her. She doubted many people had even passed through it.
But, Allina reminded herself, I'm not a human at the moment, now am I?I'm the mouse-girl, and I have a mission.
With that, she stepped into the forest. She had to find Alejandra.
