I awoke the next morning to the light sound of rain against my window. I smiled half asleep. I always loved the rain. The sound and feel of it against my skin always had a way of calming me. I looked over at my alarm clock 6:30, I guess it was time to get up and get this over with. I slowly climbed out of bed and stretched. I made my way to my desk and rummaged through my duffel bag looking for something to wear. I grabbed out a pair of faded blue skinny jean with the ripped knees, a white tank top and my black hoodie. I rummaged through for a few more minutes looking for some under clothes and a pair of socks. Finding everything I needed I grabbed my converses and headed to the bathroom for a quick shower. After getting out I went in search of another travel bag to put all my bathroom products in.
After everything was packed and ready I went into the kitchen to fix a bowl of cereal. My mom was already in the dining room reading the newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee. I decided to sit at the bar. It's not like she would talk to me if I sat at the table. As soon as I finished and put my bowl in the sink. I heard my mother call. "Rayne, come in here a minute." I walked into the dining room and hesitated at the end of the table. "Here I need you to give this to your father when you get there." She said, sliding a white envelope across the table. "What is it?' I asked "Just your birth certificate and stuff." She said standing up for the table and putting the paper down. "Go put your stuff in the car. We'll be leaving in ten minutes." She called over her shoulder as she headed down the hall toward her bedroom. I couldn't help, but notice how chipper how attitude was this morning. I picked up the envelope and went back to my room and stuffed it in the side pocket of the duffel bag. I picked it up and threw it onto my shoulder, then picked up the other two bags and my skateboard and walked out of my room for the last time. I didn't look back.
The airport was crowded with people hurrying to catch their planes and saying good bye to their loved ones. My mom didn't even get out of the car. She handed me my plane ticket, told me my flight left at ten, waited until I got my stuff out of the trunk and then drove away. I watched her car until it faded into the traffic and then picked up my bags and went through the sliding doors. The hardest part about that day though wasn't her driving away as if I didn't exist. It was the two hour plane ride from Montana to Washington. I hadn't been around so many people within the last eight months. What if the dog came out? I'm pretty sure it would have been near impossible to hide a big white dog on a plane. I sat by the window staring out at the dark clouds with my headphones on and my iPod blaring. I kept wondering what was gonna happen once I got to Washington, would my father be at the gate waiting? Did he even know what time I was landing?
My fear was unfounded though. As soon as I stepped out of the gate there he was. He looked exactly like the picture I had seen. His face was a little older and he had a little grey in his hair, but I knew it was him right away. I slowly made my way toward him and he did the same. We met in the middle and stood staring at each other for a moment as the crowd parted around us. "Hello Rayne" he said, he had a deep voice, strange but somehow familiar. "Hi," I said looking down at my feet and readjusting the shoulder strap of my laptop bag. He reached over and grabbed my shoulders and pulled me into an awkward hug. Then he grabbed my bag and slung it over his shoulder. "How was your flight?' he asked looking down at me. "It's was fine, I just listened to music the whole way." I said as I tucked my skateboard under my arm. "Really? What kinda music do you like?" He asked as we walked to the baggage claim. "Mostly rock, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Soultrap, bands like that." I answered peering at him out of the corner of my eye wondering if he was really interested or if it was just his way of making small talk. I picked up my two bags off the conveyor belt, but he took the duffel bag out of my hands and threw it onto his other shoulder. "Is this it?" he asked turning towards me. "Yup, all I need." I answered. "Alright then, lets go" he said as he turned towards the exit.
