A numb, icy sensation rushes through my veins. This is actually happening. My biggest nightmare is becoming my new reality, and let me tell you, I'm not exactly bursting with joy at the thought of it.
Demi finally averts her gaze from the blue and white tiled floor and spots us instantly. She elevates her glasses to the top of her head and flashes a small smile in our direction. Cute. As if I'm going to fall for her act of innocence.
Demi advances tentatively.
"Thank you for bringing her." She shakes Eric's hand, then Susan's.
"Take care of her Demi." Susan says with a sigh. She turns to me and jerks me in close to her chest.
"I love you." I whimper, withholding my tears.
"We love you, too." she tells me. "Call whenever you need anything." I nod at her offer.
Eric places his large hand firmly on my shoulder and says, "Come back and visit, okay?" Again, I nod. With that, they are on their way, abandoning me with Demi."Are these yours?" Demi points to my luggage that had been propped up against a nearby wall.
"Yes." I reply coldly. She gawks at me with a pained expression, but smiles despite it.
As she bends down to grab the bags, I hiss, "Don't you have your own luggage to carry?"
She straightens up.
"I shipped it all." she replies solemnly. "This is the only bag I brought on the flight." She gestures to her bulky black purse that is strapped across her body. In each hand, I grasp the handles of my bags and heave them off of the ground. Before Demi has the chance to object, I gyrate on my heel and rush toward the exit. I hear the click of her heels, alerting me that I'm being shadowed.I pause once I reach the parking lot. Scanning the rows and rows of vehicles, I realize grimly that I'm going to need directions from Demi. I hesitate before peering back at her. Demi points to a shiny 2015 Cadillac Escalade to our left silently. Of course, I should have known that Demi would own the most expensive car in the lot. I huff a sigh, purposely making it clear enough for the She-Devil to hear.
I relinquish my bags after I reach her vehicle. As I massage my shoulders and neck, Demi mumbles, "I told you I could help."
"Maybe I don't want your help!" I snap, turning to face her. "And maybe I didn't want you to come looking for me, trying to be 'Mom of the Year'. Cause the thing is Demetria, you're not!"Demi stands there speechless for once, wearing a gaping look that practically screamed shock and desperation. If I actually cared about her, I would apologize. But I don't. I will never be able to envision her as anything other the monster she used to be, even if that monster managed to turn herself into a beautiful-hearted, caring woman. But that's unlikely.
I climb into the passenger side of the vehicle, meanwhile letting Demi deal with my bags since that's obviously what she wants. The door slams as I yank it shut. Demi seats herself in front of the wheel and I jam my headphones into my ears straightaway. I want to ask how long it will be until we get to her home -our home- but I was most definitely not going to give her the satisfaction of knowing that I need her for something. It's bad enough that I already needed her to point out the location of her vehicle.
I groan, propping my elbow on the armrest and dropping my chin into my hand. Demi turns the key in the ignition and glides the car carefully out of the tight parking space. Turning my focus to the passing scenery as we power onto the highway, I discover bleakly that we are driving the opposite way of Bathurst. Farther and farther away from the life I've grown to know so well, so I can start anew with Demi. Joy to me.
