"Do I even need this degree that much?," I moaned angrily from the living room, where I had multiple text books spread out around the room.
"You do if you want this job after your career in sports is over Tobs," Christen replied, she was in the kitchen making dinner for us, we had a club game tomorrow and she usually did game day cooking, as my chef skills weren't all that great.
"Yeah but like, why do I need to learn biology to teach little kids?," I groaned back, I was looking at my computer screen where the topic "Communication" had taken up residence, a large coloured diagram of an ear was center stage.
"It's not the biology that you need, it's learning communication," She replied, her tone indicating I had asked a stupid question. Which was fair, except it all came from biology textbooks.
"But, it's in textbooks, about biology, so I'm doing biology," I shot back playfully, watching Christen's reflection in the silverware hanging in the kitchen, her lips curled upwards in a grin, but her eyebrows creased confusingly, her soft features conflicting each other.
"If we weren't flatmates I'd honestly leave you at training the next opportunity I got," She laughed playfully while I rolled my eyes.
"So not cause we're like friends or anything right?" I replied, adding a couple words to my worksheets.
"I guess so, you're my only friend in Portland so I guess I'm stuck," She answered, although I wasn't quite sure if she was kidding or not.
"You've only been here a couple weeks, and all the Thorns love you! You went to lunch with Hayley a couple of days ago too," I added, hoping my words would make at least a small difference.
"I know, I think I just miss Utah, I was there for a while, but I'm sure I'll get used to it soon. Anyway, what happened with that footballer you met from Europe, you guys like going to take it further?" She replied, taking attention away from the initial matter.
"Nah she wasn't my type, we're friends though," I answered shrugging my shoulders.
"You have a type?" Christen laughed. Little had she figured out that my type was dark haired, and standing in my apartment kitchen.
"Yeah doesn't everyone?" I asked, palming the question off.
"I don't," She shrugged, poking her head around the corner to meet me eye to eye "If I like someone, I like them, I don't care if they're tall or short, dark haired or not, a dude, or well a woman, people are people and everyone is beautiful," She added, slinking back into the kitchen. I contemplated her sentence, she suggested she could like women, which is probably today's best news, but then again we've been friends for years and If she liked me she probably would have told me by now. Except I haven't exactly told her either.
I returned to my work with thoughts of the girl in my kitchen present everywhere, it was that bad I couldn't concentrate, I was trying to learn about how our five senses aided communication but all I could think about was her, and how she could make my senses go wild. Specifically sight because she was so gorgeous, a living artwork, but sound, because her voice gave me the chills, smell because her perfume had me weak when she walked in the door.
"Dinner is ready Tobs," Christen shouted from the kitchen, I could hear her shifting around the kitchen draws searching for cutlery and cups. I wandered after her, she was still struggling to figure out what draws had what in them, I tapped her shoulder and opened the draw to her left, full of knives and forks. She rolled her eyes and reached in to get what she needed, brushing my hand gently in doing so.
We sat in silence for a while as we both ate peacefully, she'd made spaghetti again which I loved, and probably ate too much of. I finished my plate much quicker than she did, and sat contemplating my degree while she finished, eventually she finished hers too. "I'm going to try finish this crap," I told her, pointing at my textbooks.
