Chapter 3
We sat there in silence. Our eyes flicking from each other's faces.
"You should tell them about what happened in the meadow..."
No, no I don't.
"He said that we should get to know each other. We'll start with your name, age, who you live with, how old you are and your birthday. You know, basic information." I suggested, ignoring the voice in my head.
"My name is Mindy Ranger, I live with my parents and two brothers, Peter and Philip. I'm 14 years old and I was born on 7th March."
"My name is Marcus Scott and I'm 14. I have a sister, Amanda. I entered the world on the 1st of March."
"My name is Nathan Frost. I'm 14. I live with my aunt, uncle, brother and sister, Samuel and Samantha. My birthday is on 6th February."
Each of them introduced themselves accordingly, while I stayed quiet, considering if the people standing in front of me were to be trusted.
Did I actually believe all that TWS had written in that letter? What if trusting the three teenagers in front me was part of a master plan to harm me?
What if-
"Tiffany? Are you ok? You zoned out." Mindy asked, looking me straight in the eye with concern swirling around in her green eyes. "I'm fine." I said simply, even though I was making a very hard decision that would probably decide my fate.
Do I trust these people?
"What... what do you mean? You don't trust us?" Mindy stepped back. Three pairs of eyes were pointed at me and I felt myself shrink. Their gazes bored a hole in my heart, and it hurt. A lot.
If I say no, and they turn out to be good people, I would have enemies in this unknown place. If I say yes, would I... would I be risking myself unnecessarily?
Well, I don't have choice... do I?
They trusted me enough to let me in the house without questioning and tell me about themselves.
"No, it's not that. It's just... It's a lot to take in..." I lied. "What are we going to do after the week is done?" I tried to change the subject. Mindy, still looking suspicious, turned around to face the others and said "We should explore this place first," gesturing to the shack, "and look for things that might come in handy." Nathan, surprised at the sudden change in topic, asked "Like what? Where are we going?" "We're going on an adventure to who knows where and we need supplies like food, money and equipment." I said, rolling my eyes at his ignorance. His mouth turned into a perfect 'O' before setting to work.
By nightfall, we had searched the entire two floored house. There was a kitchen, study, living room, dining room and four bedrooms. How that many rooms fit in one tiny little shack was beyond me. There was even a garden at the back. It was almost like magic.
Almost.
In the kitchen, there was so much food that it could have lasted us for years. Most of it was just staple foods, vegetables and fruits. Pots and pans of different sizes were hung up neatly on the wall. Utensils and cutlery were stored in the drawers in an orderly fashion.
"Where's all the tidbits and sweets?" Marcus was devasted. "What are we supposed to eat? We can't eat all these raw!" Mindy exclaimed, gesturing towards the shelves and shelves of ingredients. "None of us know how to cook!"
"I do." I said in a small voice.
All their gazes turned to me. They stared at me like I was an alien.
