As the gloomy rain lashed at my window, I looked down at my diary sitting expectantly on my lap, and read the very few words I'd written. Every time I tried to write, an overwhelming sense of sadness soared through me, and my thoughts had already swamped my mind, before I got the chance to put pen to paper once more.
I had had the best summer. One that can never be replaced, no matter what I plan to do in the summer's to come. I didn't realise it was possible to miss a person so deeply that you'd only known for two months, but here I was sulking in my room because of this.
Looking back through photos hurt the most. Seeing the epitome of happiness on our faces as we grin at the camera, or the perfectly imperfect photos that I took of him when he thought I wasn't looking.
Remembering the feeling of his hand intertwined with mine, feeling the rough calluses of his fingertips graze my own, softer ones, and holding on tight to each other as if it was a promise to never let go. But we did. Well, he did.
A harsh knock, ripped me out of my thoughts, and before I could even ask who it was, my best friend, Scarlett, stormed in, her shoulder-length golden waves bouncing upon her tall frame.
'Sofia!' She bounded over to me and her comforting arms wove around my sunken posture.
'I've been so worried about you, you haven't answered any of yesterday's or today's calls. What happened to calling each other every day huh?' Scarlett said pulling away and assessing every emotion that was evident to her on my face. Even though we had only known each other for about a year, and had become much closer since the first term of uni began, it felt like a lifetime.
Having a best friend that I was so close to, was a blessing and a curse. It meant that I always had someone I could talk to at any time I needed, for comfort or advice, or just to have someone who knew me better than I sometimes knew myself. However, it meant that I couldn't get away with anything because she would instantly know if something was up.
'I'm sorry, I just I lost track of time.' I gave her a weak smile and cradled my knees with my arms.
'That is no excuse Soph, please tell me you're not still moping about that boy you met during summer!'
It wasn't that I didn't trust Scar, because I would trust her with my life, but I just couldn't bring myself to reveal his name. By telling it to her, everything would become more real, and I wasn't ready for that. Not just yet. But soon.
'It's been a month! You're in your first year at university, you're a freshman! And you should be going out and partying like all the rest of us and making the most of this time!' Scar enthused, pulling me off my chair, displaying the oversized jumper and grey sweats that I had been wearing for the past three days.
'These will not do at all,' Scarlett huffed, pulling at the massive piece of fabric.
'Won't do for what?' I questioned, looking at her and praying she wasn't planning something in that mind of hers.
'A party!' Seeing my face drop, she quickly added ' It's only down the hall, Fern from our English lectures is hosting it. I promise it'll be fun!'
'Scar, I love you, I really do and I appreciate you trying, but I just want to stay in tonight.' I said, taking a step back towards my cozy armchair.
Scarlett's strong hands stopped me, and in a persistent tone she said 'I'm not taking no for an answer, the only way I'll allow you out of this one, is if you tell me the full story of what happened in summer, but that's never going to happen, so party it is!' She began to rifle through my wardrobe for a revealing outfit to wear, when a phrase slipped out my mouth that surprised us both.
'Okay then, make yourself comfortable and I'll tell you everything you so desperately wish to know.'
