She opened her eyes. Or so she thought she did. But it was all dark. She couldn't see anything. So she blinked again. But everything was still pitch black.
"W-what's wrong? I-I can't see.." She stammered
"It'll be okay.. You'll get your eyesight back in no time.." The doctor said
She wanted to cry. But she didn't. She felt empty. How did she end up like this? The last thing she remembers is fourth grade. But for some reason she knew that much more time had passed
"We wanna see her.." She heard someone say
"I'm sorry ma'am.. But.. Your daughter has lost her memory and is temporarily blind.. We believe that this is all part of the aftershock and that everything will soon come back to her.. But for now, we don't want to overwhelm her.." The doctor said
"Mom?" She got up in a sitting position on her bed and looked straight and directly at the wall that was white. But she saw black.
"Oh! Honey.. I'm here.." Her mom came inside and held her hand tightly
"Mom? I can't see mommy.. I can't see.." She weeped
Her eyes poured out tears of remorse and hatred from her own in capability.
"I'm here honey.. It's okay.."
"Where's Ayite?"
"They're all outside.."
With that all the guys came inside and smiled at her. They were confused when she was only looking straight in front of her. Her brown eyes looked lost. Like if she was staring into nothing.
"Ruth? Ruth what's wrong?" Elani asked as she got closer
"M-mom.. Who's that?" Ruth asked trying to find her mom's hand once again
"That's Elani.. Don't you recognize her voice?" Her mom asked
"N-no.. Where's Ayite?" She asked once again
"I'm here.. What's wrong? Don't tell me you don't recognize us!" He joked as he came close and hugged her tightly .
She didn't hug back quickly. But her hands soon found his back and she wrapped her around around him. She Buried her head in his neck, taking in his sweet cologne.
"Guys-" her mom began
"No.. Ma.. It's okay.. Umm.. I don't know how many of you are here but.. I'm sorry.. I don't remember anything.. But Ayite.. I'm blind." She said the last part harshly
"Wait what?" It was Elani who broke the intense silence that was building up
"Okay Ruth.. Tell me the last thing you remember- oh! I didn't know we had so much company.." The doctor smiled.
"She's blind?! What!! How? " Elani asked
"She's blind and lost her memory.. Please leave.. We don't want anything becoming too much of an intrusion.." The doctor made them all leave
A pair of blue eyes lingering a little longer as he walked out.
"How did this happen?" Elani asked unbelievingly
"Maybe when the house burnt down.." Ayite said
"It was too much for her.." Aden said as he sat on a chair
"I'm going home." Carlos said
"But-"
"Leave him.." Jamal said to Anees
Anees only nodded. He felt bad for Carlos. She didn't remember him. She didn't remember any of them. Nothing. She was also blind. She was in the dark. How terrible.
"Will she get better?" Anees asked looking at everyone
"Yeah.. Of course.. She has to.. She's been through so much.." Elani said shaking a little
Anees could tell that she was losing hope. She had been through enough. Every day, she would come to check up on her best friend. For 5 whole months she did that. Ruth was in a coma for 5 months and they all believed that she wouldn't wake up. She barely survived. And now she's back, broken and messed up. It's easy to lose hope like that.
But it wasn't Ruth's fault. She had forgotten everything. And they were thankful that she forgot about Levi. But what about Carlos? He was the one who brought her a new bouquet of flowers everyday. He's the one who came in their anniversary dates and read her The Fault In Our Stars. He deserved to hate her. But he couldn't. How could he?
"Welcome home.." Her mom said
She smiled and closed her eyes, took a deep breath and exhaled.
