Roommates 2 is being worked on and I was reading and I swear this is what it says exactly.
"In January of 2016, One Direction went on hiatus, giving the individual members time to pursue their own interests."
So they took a break to do other stuff that they liked other than staying and doing the same thing over and over again.
Other than staying in one place doing the same thing, they're on a break and getting some much deserved time off from the band music itself.
How you feel doing the same thing every day for years. It gets tiring. All we have to do is be patient and wait till the day they end the hiatus.
