I don't know why but I have really short chapters

So at one point in the story the main character is in a crisis and this new bestie (that was absent) suddenly shows up. It annoys me though.
Like, where were you in the beginning of the story? Oh, and I just love it when the main is all like oh yeah we've been best friends since we were little. If they were best friends when they were little then the so called best friend would have been there when the crisis started.
