How to Save A Friend

What do you do with someone who's physically weak

Mentally strong

Socially unstable

But all the while capable

Told they're too different

They'll always be left alone

Never able to share companionship

Left behind in the dust

With only their thoughts of self-despise swirling around to keep company

Creating a void within their heart

Involuntarily sucking in air

For the panic welling up inside

Overwhelmed

Incapable of standing up

But a helping hand

In the form of death comes up from behind

Always ready to mark what is its

The boy who's been left alone all his life

The girl who's been abandoned by the one she loved most

The old man who's never had someone to grow old with anxiously waiting for Death's hand

The woman who's left out in the streets when she's just trying to support her family the only way she knows how, shunned by the ones she loves

The teenager who's come to terms to who he is, an outcast because he's not "normal"

The people they all trust with their lives, turn their backs on them

So they turn to death for comfort

When they are lost

Cold

Deprived

Alone

In this vast spacious world

Who can they turn to

When they have no one

When what they trust betrays them

When they're turned away in their time of need

What can they do

Than wallow in self-remorse

Wondering what could've happened if they did this

If they could change this

If they hadn't come out with courage for who they are

If they weren't themselves

Is this what society has become?

A monster that refuses to help those in need

That locks them up in facilities

Disowns them

Abuses them verbally, mentally, or physically

Told they're never going to make it

They disgust you

When all they need is love

Comfort

Told "everything's going to be alright"

"We'll take care of you"

"Don't worry, I'm here for you whenever you need me"

"I'm right here, right by your side"

Or even a form of just being there by their side

A hug

Pat on the back

At the very least

Acknowledged

So don't act as if you don't know who they are

As if you're better than them, superior

As if you've never done any wrong

You're sidestepping them

Toeing around their misery, their pain

You just stand there

Taking notice but not bothering to act upon premonition

Because you know what happens to those

You know what they end up as

So when you wake up one day,

Know this,

Sometimes, those kids who you never bothered to know

Acknowledge

Lend a hand

They won't wake up

They won't know what it's like to fall in love

Begin a family

Grow up

Taste success

Close an old chapter in order to open a new one

Because they weren't able to open that new chapter

They weren't given a second chance

So the next time you see someone like that

Help them

Be there

Be a friend

And maybe you could learn
