Crack, shuffle, snap

The sound of someone watching from the shadows of the trees.

I hadn't believed the rumors about walking out after dark

Old wife's tale.

superstition.

I was dead wrong.

I had felt his stare since I stepped out the door.

can one stare if they have no eyes?

Apparently so.

I started walking faster, but he could keep up.

His spindly legs wove in between the trees like a ghost.

His split smile combing through from the leaves like the Cheshire Cat.

I couldn't get away. His arms reached for me.

his long, skinny arms.

His blank face.

his haunting smile.

His peircing stare, that wasnt there.

he had been watching

Waiting

the fear he smelled.

the breathing all to loud, was now gone.

He tasted me.

he had been there the whole time

and he still is

Don't turn around you might face
