It has been a few weeks since I was assigned my squad and my fireteam and nedless to say, Maddi and Parker have definantly been getting cozy with each other.
Even now as we are doing our morning workout I look over and see her glance not subtly at Parker while he tries to do the same.
I roll my eyes and continue with the training.
It's hard for me to grasp the thought that I have been at boot camp for eight of the twelve weeks required.
Just eight weeks ago I was fighting with my good for nothing family.
Just eight weeks ago I was stuck in the hell called school. Just eight weeks ago I was surrounded by no one who actually cared for me.
It's amazing how someone's life can change in just eight weeks.
Wiping my sweaty face with a towel we finish our workout and disperse to head to the showers to clean up for breakfast and then Basic Warrior Training.
Basic Warrior Training is where recruits are taught basic skills of survival in combat, such as combat marksmanship skills, land navigation, proper gas mask use, and how to maneuver under enemy fire.
Grabbing my M16-A4 rifle, I meet up with the rest of my squad and prepare for training.
I actually acquisitioned my rifle earlier in my time at boot camp but all we had really done with it was learn how to keep it clean and which shooting position worked the best for us.
However, I just finally fired live rounds last week in sitting, standing, kneeling, and prone positions from different distances.
I grunt and remember that according to some other recruits, this week is supposed to be hell.
My squad begins to march the Day Walk Course which is just one part of the training and starts before the sun is even up.
My squad and I low crawled across the first portion of the course.
This isn't so bad. I thought. But then we had to back-crawl under barbed wire, rush over the "tall wall" and look for traps all at the same time until we came to the finish.
My elbows were tired of having to crawl through the mud, my knees were sore, my back ached, my blood was pumping, and my whole body was sweating buckets no liters of sweat.
Throughout the whole course, we would encourage each other to push further. To become Marines we have to stop thinking of ourselves.
Our menacing DI made us complete the course multiple times just to get it perfect and then make us start over.
I look over and see Maddi and Jen tiring and becoming slower along with some of the guys.
"Come on you guys! We can make it! We just have to push ourselves!" I yelled at everyone, despite being tired, achy, sweaty, tattered and covered in a mixture of mud and sand from head to toe.
We were finally told to stop when our DI yelled, not missing the opportunity to call us maggots and over course weaken our self-esteem at the same time.
The relief from the other recruits was so tangible it almost made my stone mask slip from my face.
"Attention!" our DI yells practically spitting.
We snap to attention quickly and stand silently with our body stiff and straight, the feet together, and both arms at the side until he yells "At Ease".
The rest of the week we learned how to navigate the terrain using maps and compasses in both the day and night all in preparation for the upcoming combat fitness testing next week.

Thanks for sticking with this story even with the slow updates :) I have been trying to actually do research to get some accuracy for this story so it is taking longer but hopefully you all think the end product is better! I have not been in the military so do not judge to harshly but comments are helpful!
So I know this was kinda short but hopefully I can update again soon!
