Home.
What do you think of when you hear the word home? To some, home is a welcoming place of love, warmth, and family. To me. home is dark, cold, and lonely.
Ever since I could remember I have always been alone. My father left when I was three leaving after he heard my mom was pregnant with my brother Dylan.
After that, my mom was absent in my life. She became withdrawn like an empty shell, lifeless and without purpose.
Even though I had my brother, I had no one to truly talk to.
At school, I was also alone. Everyone there was quick to judge and only cared about superficial appearances while I actually cared about my future.
Even though I had Claire as a friend, she never knew about my home life.
Then I met Finn. The gym was my one solace. My one safe haven from the judging and prying eyes of the world. My one place where I could be me and forget about my worries.
There, I made my only true friend.
Moving my head off of the hard window I had been resting on, I squint a the sunlight shining in my eyes.
As I look out the window, I begin to recognize some of the houses we pass by and my palms begin to feel clammy.
This is real. I am really going home.
I look over to Finn and ask, "Hey Finn, can I stay at your place for a while? I don't really want to see my parents."
"Sure cupcake!" He responds with a small grin.
I then continue to watch the houses pass by again and notice that we are soon going to be passing my old house.
I look over and see that the house is in terrible shape. The grass is so tall that it doesn't look like it has been mowed since I left. The paint is also chipping off of the walls and a weird brownish creme color has replaced the once bright canary yellow exterior.
But the thing that I grimace the most about is the old dented blue pickup that is parked in the front driveway that belongs to no other than the terrible man who is my father.
Even though it has been almost three months since I left, I am not surprised that these changes have occurred. When a parasite has wormed its way into a new host, it's only a matter of time before it drains everything, leaving behind once again, another empty shell.
The feeling of the car stopping pulls me out of my trance.
I look up and we are in front of Finn's apartment building.
The car soon pulls to a stop and I get out. Grabbing my luggage from the trunk I follow Finn up the four flights of stairs to his small apartment.
Pulling his keys out of his pocket, he unlocks the door and lets me in.
"You can put your stuff in the guest room," he says as he goes to check for food in his fridge.
I walk into the smallish room and see a queen bed, an old dresser, and a single chair that was propped up against the wall.
I heave my suitcase onto the chair and throw myself onto the bed.
Staring at the ceiling I get lost in my thoughts but I am awoken by a loud curse.
I scoot off of the bed and rush to check on Finn.
When I come into the kitchen I see Finn on the floor rubbing his head.
"What happened?" I inquire.
"Don't ask," he replies with a laugh as I help heave him off the floor.
Brushing off his pans Finn says, "So the fridge is empty. Would you mind going out to the grocery store?"
"Ya, I can go," I reply while grabbing my wallet and shrugging on my leather jacket.
"Take the bike," Finn says as he throws me the keys.
Catching them I leave Finn's apartment and rush down the stairs towards the tarp covered bike parked next to Finn's car.
I pull off the tarp and whistle lowly at the black 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 300 ABS motorcycle.
After putting on the helmet attached to the back of the bike, I hop on the bike and pull out of the driveway towards the only grocery store in town, Fareway Grocery.
Parking the bike in one of the open spots I swing my leg over the side and pull the helmet off of my head, my hair spilling in what felt like slow motion.
I pull my leather jacket tighter around my body as if that one action can warm my body against the crisp chill of the foreboding winter.
Walking into the store I try to keep my head down, hoping that I won't encounter anyone I used to know.
I grab some of the essentials such as bread, milk, and of course, barbecue lays potato chips.
As I go toward the next aisle to grab some items to make some salad, I see Jason with his arm wrapped around Brittney.
I quickly scurry out of that aisle but as I turn to walk away I am pushed to the ground as someone slams into me.
Looking up come face to face with the one person I had hoped to never see again..... my mother.
"Rayne?" she gasps, holding her hand to her mouth.
Hearing this, Brittney and Jason turn around and also stare at me.
"Rayne?" they both say in a questioning manner.
I quickly slip under my mom's arm and rush through the throngs of shoppers and head to a self-checkout, scanning my items and bagging them.
As I rush outside, I shove the groceries in the bike's back compartment.
I quickly mount the bike but as I go to put on my helmet, I hear people yelling my name.
I see my mom with Brittney and Jason yelling my name and starting to run towards me.
Shoving on the helmet, I hop on the bike and speed off back to Finn's apartment without looking back.
