~Lileigh's P.O.V~Hiding from the law is not easy, let me tell you. Me and my brother Luke, along with our dog Harlow, have been running from authorities since I was 10 (Luke was 11). Don't get me wrong we're not criminals!
Our parents died 6 years ago. We didn't want to go into a foster home so here we are, on the run. We have been trying to find a good place to stay but it's a lot easier said than done. It has to be secluded so we don't get caught, it has to be big enough to comfortably fit two teenagers and a dog, and the most important part? It has to be cheap.
What? You think we can afford an actual house or something? Neither me nor Luke can get a job because it requires identification, of which we are lacking. Thus meaning we rely on our income to come from our little 'trades'. Like I said, we're not criminals...
Anywho, enough with the life story, let's get back to finding a home. We are walking down a dark and empty alleyway. It smells of mold and trash. We are trying to find a place to hunker down for the night to rest when I spot something up ahead on the alley wall.
"Hey Luke look! Someone put up a poster!" My excitement got the better of me and I take off in a full sprint towards the colourful paper. "Lileigh wait! It could be dangerous!" I heard Luke shout behind me. I turn to see both Luke and Harlow following close behind me. I stop once I reach the poster. It was quite colourful, like something for a carnival.
It was obviously meant to catch attention, so why is it in a secluded alley? My mind can't think anymore as I read over the contents of the oddly placed flyer. I feel my heart skip and beat and an audible gasp escapes my brother as he too reads the words.
"Fenner Brothers Reality! For any of your housing needs." The paper read, as well as an address on the bottom. "Luke this might be it...we might finally find a home!" I shout with elation. I then, however, notice that Luke's expression does not match my own.
"What?" I question him. "I just don't trust it Lileigh. Why would someone put a reality poster in a alleyway? Does that not raise any flags to you?" He replied with suspicion. My elation turned to irritation. I can see his point but what other choice do we have?
"When you live like us you can't afford to not take a risk. What is this is our one chance to find a home? If we don't take this then we might lose the opportunity forever!" I tried not to raise my voice but I ultimately fail.
The look on Luke's face now is almost unreadable. He just looks...blank. "I don't want you to see those Fenner brothers and that is final." His voice was eerily calm and he made his point. I just hope he can forgive me.....
**TIME SKIP**
The three of us eventually find a nice spot to sleep for the night. Once I'm sure Luke is asleep, I gently roll Harlow off me and stand up. Harlow looks at me with a lazy gaze and drifts back to sleep. I sigh and begin to walk in the direction of the poster address.
It was about a 15 minute walk until I stumbled upon a dreary little shack. It looked completely abandoned. It was a dull grey with shingles missing. The wooden steps looked splintered and led up to a white door with a ripped screen.
Some of the windows were cracked and dusty and the grass around the area was dead. I knew I should probably turn back but my stubbornness was not about to let me do that. I took a deep breath and cautiously approached the house. I step onto the splintered steps and they groaned at the intrusion. At the top, I placed my hand on the old door handle.
It too squeaked with underuse. I slowly opened the noisy door and entered. The inside was just as eerie as the out. It's a small, dimly lit, one story shack. Visible cob webs flourish in the corners and dust covers every surface. There's so much dust that I can see it in the air. The floor bored look worn and beaten and they too squeak.
