"How far is your house now?" he asks again.
"Still five minutes." I say "If you didn't want to walk home, you should've thought about that before one, you decided to ditch school, and two, you declined Nathans ride this morning."
He rolls his eyes and says "Technically, that was you. Green bean doesn't even know I exist."
"Stop calling him Green bean!" I say, turning my head back to my house. "There it is."
I point to my house and Luke sighs in relief, but we both stop on the side walk when my front door flies open and slams against the wall outside.
"What is-" A man walks angrily out of my house and towards the car that I just noticed was parked in the drive way and my mom follows after him.
"Don't you dare think to come back here, Tom!" she shouts and its a bit of a weird site to see her yelling, especially at someone she doesn't know.
"Marissa," he shouts and turns around to face my mother, who stands behind him. "This is my house. I will come here as I please."
"You will not!" She shouts back. But the man turns back to his car and yanks the door open, not responding to my mother.
His car starts and his door shuts. As he pulls out of the driveway, my mother races inside and the front door slams shut again.
This is his house?
"I um, I know that you're confused-" Luke begins and of course hes right.
"Im not confused." I lie. "Turn that off!" I begin to trudge towards my house, not sure if I'm ready to confront my mother about what just happened in our front yard, or what may actually be Toms front yard.
"Turn it off?" He asks. "Turn what off?"'
"That thing. When you tell me how I'm feeling. Turn it off." As soon as I open the front door, an unwelcoming sense of dread takes over me and Luke turns to me and asks,
"Whats going to happen? Who was that guy?" I don't know what to say, so I shrug in response.
When I walk into the house, I hear the sound of running water coming from the kitchen. The idea of confronting my mom doesn't seem to be the best thing idea anymore, and the feeling of dread grows like a hole in my stomach.
"Amelia? Is that you?" my mom calls after me as I reach the middle of the stairs. "I heard the front door. Why are you home so early?"
The sound of running water stops and my mother comes out of the kitchen, drying her hands on a dish towel.
"I really wasn't feeling good." I say and she nods her head before tilting it to the side.
"Does this have anything to do with what happened last night?" She asks and it takes me a moment to understand that shes talking about when she came to my room after Luke had touched my elbow.
"Oh, no. Don't worry about it mom." I shake my head and walk back up the stairs, only to see that Luke is already at the top.
"Amelia?" He calls, his voice full of warning and then he places a hand on his stomach and says "I don't-I don't feel right."
I wave my hand in the direction of my bedroom and run up the stairs.
"Go to my room." I whisper-yell and he runs down the hallway and to my room.
I follow after him, looking over the railing and making sure that my mom isn't paying attention to anything thats happening up here.
I turn into my room and close the door behind me, locking it.
"Luke are you-" I scan the room, but Luke us nowhere to be seen. "Luke?"
Flashes of white appear all over my room and Luke appears by my dresser, but in a flash, hes gone again.
"Luke?" I panic and make my way over to the dresser where he appears again, just a bit more translucent.
"Luke?" He looks up at me with wide, fearful eyes. "What was that? What happened?"
"I don't know. Amelia," He rushes out and then whispers as if somebody else will hear him, "I'm scared."
"What? Why are you scared? What happened to you?" I spit out question after question.
"Amelia!" He stops me and I look into his eyes. "Amelia, I saw myself."
