Late

At the front of the classroom, a substitute was trying to get the attention of 31 bored students, purposefully ignoring him, in an attempt to finally piss him off so much he would just have to abandon the room in a fit of rage, leaving the children to their own.

A 32nd student, however, was watching the door, drumming her ragged fingernails into the shiny new plastic of the desk and pulling lightly at a curly mop of nest like black hair. Awaiting the arrival of Haley Devin.

Finn Johnston had watched a similar scenario unfold everyday for the past two weeks. If everything was running as usual, then in the next minute or so, a feathery bundle of blonde  would crash into the doorframe as Haley made her presence known.
Finn brought an antique watch to her tanned  face,

"2 more minutes" she mumbled.

"2 more minutes to what?"

Kat poked her head out from behind Finn, putting an intense conversation about the importance of oranges in today's society with 2 other girls - Sophie and Anya- on hold for a few seconds.

"Oh- ugh, just... it's nothing" Finn felt her cheeks heat up in embarrassment and Kat grinned.

"Could it be, a certain person who always comes in late with a denim jacket and guitar on their back?"

You already knowwww why are you teasing? I hate you so much sometimes. Thoughts ran through Finn's head.

"Maybe." She grumbled

"Only a maybe?"

"So what if it is?"

"Oh, nothing." Still grinning, Kat turned round to continue her riveting conversation.

Finn took the opportunity to say, " You're so annoying"

"You love me really" Kat replied without hesitation, and whipped a perfectly straight piece of caramel coloured hair from her shoulder.

Finn just rolled a pair of forest green eyes and sighed . The two girl's had been friends for what felt like a lifetime, but in reality was only 4 years. Having also been neighbours for 3 of them, they knew each other inside out, meaning neither of them had any secretes. Haley Devin was no exception, and Kat liked to remind Finn of it every moment she could.

It was then, when Finn was deep in thought about how to get back at Kat for constantly embarrassing her, when someone skidded into the front of the class and started panting heavily. Finn looked up.

"Good afternoon, Haley." The substitute groaned, voice dripping in sarcasm, "Care to explain why you are late? Again?"

"Again?" Breathlessly, Haley replied, a hand went to her heart "but sir? Yesterday I wasn't that late. Can't you cut a little slack for me? It's not easy living on the other side of the whole city." The class sniggered at her half assed excuse, and she is met with a raised eyebrow by  'sir'.

"If your late again a letter will be going home."

Like that'll make a difference.

"Now just sit down before I send you to the Head's office." Haley nodded and walked to the back of the class, rolled her eyes, and Finn stifled a giggle.

Finn had been staring at the guitar.
The one that Haley brought into school every Tuesday for music class. Currently propped up against a window, Finn found herself deep in thought about how lonely it looked.

I've never seen her play it, I bet if she was playing it, it wouldn't look so lonely.

It was midnight blue, the same colour as Haley's eyes, a colour that she loved but was never able to recreate when drawing. Which, according to Kat, was always.

A pencil hit the back of her head.

"Hey! Gonna help me with this? Seriously I don't understand how I'm expected to get it, it's physics! Remind me why we took physics?" Kat's dainty face had planted itself on her desk in dismay, making Finn laugh at the sight.

"I didn't even realise we were doing any work. Catch me up?"

A raised eyebrow was thrown her way, "Do I look like freaking Einstein?"

"Good point." She smirked

"I can help" a velvety voice floated into Finn's ears, a voice she knew almost as well as her own, as Haley leaned forward from behind Kat, waiting for a response.

"Ugh.... sure! Thank you!"

What?

Confusion was written all over both Kat and Finn's faces as Haley pulled a chair up to Kat's desk.

What's going on? Why is she talking to her like that? Since when has she ever liked Kat?

Finn could tell the exact same thoughts were swimming around in Kat's head.
You see, for some unknown reason, Haley had always found Kat rather annoying, and, being closer to Finn, had told her many times.

Feeling a little uncomfortable, and also nervous that she may be staring at Haley's pixie short hair just a little to much. Finn turned back to her own blank page.

"Finn don't go you don't even know what we are meant to be doing." Kat's pleading beckoned her away from her work.

"Sure" Finn sighed "maybe I can actually get some work done for once." She shot a smile Haley's way, who practically grimaced in response.

"Whatever you want to do"

Ummmmm.

Then Haley turned her chair in the opposite direction, sat with her back practically right in Finn's face. Who went back to her blank page, drew some more midnight blue guitars, and wondered what the hell she had done wrong.
