Don't mention it

Last night Finn had watched it all through her bedroom window.

From Sally skipping out some insultingly bright green sports car with a kid at the wheel, to her prancing up Kat's front door, undoubtedly being as loud as she can to get her children's attention.

After 15 minutes of dark, dark silence, the inviting warmth of Kat's bedroom light snapped on.

She was all but warm.

Directly opposite Finn's own bland room, Kat's became a cove for her anger; although Kat did no throwing of possessions or banging of weary doors, Finn knew.
The bright colours she wore were uncomfortable to look at, the usually cheerful tones were too bright,  too in your face. Screaming.

Haha you thought she'd leave you alone for a while. Guess you were wrong! Again.

The air surrounding her seemed to pulse dull purple and blue.
The colour of bruises.

Haha. What did you think she was going to be? Be nice? Come on, you know that's never going to happen. Never.

Kat left her room, the door slamming behind her.

Finn had only stared down at the maths paper, running hands through her hair in frustration.

How the hell was she meant to understand fractions?

Downstairs, Finn's brother was watching some film.
"AARON!!!" She had screamed
A few seconds passed before "WHAT DO YOU WANT?"
"MATHS"
Nothing, then her door swung open and a tall, caramel skinned, angular man, sporting the infamous early 2000s emo fringe strode through the door.
Apart from the equally tanned skin, the two siblings really had nothing in common.

"Let me see it then," he hovered over Finn, hand out for the sheets.

The front door to Kat's house opened and closed again, the air seemed to ripple around Sally, as she yanked the door back and staggered to god knows where.
No, not ripple, rip.
The air surrounding Sally Henderson was being ripped apart, pooling in puddles of dark, seething green.

"You know what? Forget it. I'm going to Kat's house, I think I need to see her." Finn was walking out her house and down the short path to Kat's in seconds. Not even giving Aaron a glance.

The house was a small one, a bungalow, with a room for Kat and Elisa, one for Tom, and what could be mistaken for a large cupboard for Sally (which had belonged to Kat up until a few months ago).

Finn had barely even knocked on the door before she found herself being hugged fiercely.
She melted into the hug with a natural ease which came only from years of comforting over crappy parents.

Minutes passed before either let go.
"Thank you" Kat whispered, Finn only nodded as they made they're way to the sitting room.
A rusty looking TV sat timidly in the corner of the room, there's a couch, a fireplace and a coffee table, a couple of photographs are dotted about. Sally in a grand total of none of them.

Used to the surroundings almost as much as her own home, Finn plopped down on her designated spot next to the fireplace. For reasons she can't explain, it's where she has always sat. Kat followed shortly after and anchored herself on the wall facing Finn, ignoring the couch all together.

"She's a bitch"
"Yeah"
"She's got Tom terrified"
"Yeah"
"We never see Elisa anymore, cause of her"
"Yeah"
"We should probably do something about it"
"Yeah"
"Legal stuff. I mean"
"Right."
"Okay, well, Aaron says that-"

Kat was crying. Kat never cried, and here she was, breaking down completely. Her shoulders shook with the weight of what she carried with her. Face contorted in invisible pain, mascara stained her cheeks, her neck, the sleeves of her sweater- the one Finn had gotten her for a birthday years ago.

Unlike the many hugs the two had shared, Finn was unpracticed in the art of the comfort of a crying person. The girl in front of her was collapsing at the seams, it was as if every part of Kat was breaking. Cracks ran up her wrists to her elbows, under her eyes, along the length of her chest and neck.

Finn was still staring at her, when the doorbell rang. The breaking girl was back together instantly. It was like she'd whipped out PVA glue and expertly stuck herself back together right there and then.

"I'll get it." Finn bounced up, desperate to get away, unfortunately this only strengthened the feeling of guilt of standing back from the scene, rather than jumping in and lessening the obvious pain.
A few steps later, Elisa stood at the threshold, held at the collar by a woman with fight in her fists and sadness in her eyes. How fitting.

"El? Why are you here?" Elisa only looked sheepishly up at Finn.
"I don't want this girl coming anywhere near my Rachel again." Was all the woman said, before practically throwing the 10 year old into her arms and marching back around the corner.
"Come on El, Kat's just in the living room."
Elisa ran passed without a word, soon mumbled complaints could be heard from the other end of the small house.

Last night, Finn slept on their living room couch, watching tiny specks of the blue that infected this house danced about.

In the morning, she helped Kat get Tom and Elisa ready for the day, made lunch for them all, caught the bus to school, and didn't mention the night before once.

That was always the way when Sally was involved.
