Uh, duh. Of course I plan on asking Addie. Officially, we couldn't start getting dates until a few weeks before the dance but I could maybe reserve one first.
I caught her after school. "Hey, Addie," I called. She turned around, about to get in her car. "That dance seems fun," I said nonchalantly.
"Yeah, it's a good idea," she said. I noticed her eyes were red and puffy.
"Hey, you all right?"
She waved. "Fine, fine. But I should be getting home. I'm babysitting my brother right when I get home." She got in her car and closed the door.
"See you tomorrow, Oliver!" she called out her window. I waved. "Bye, Addie."
I didn't know she had a brother. Now that I think about it, I know next to nothing about her. Every time I asked her about her personal life, she would somehow turn the conversation back on me. Which is one thing I loved about her, albeit a selfish reason. When you talked, you were the most important person in the room. I've watched her talk to Cora and it's the same way. Addie laughed at all the right times and asked questions I wouldn't think to ask. And Cora was awkward and said the wrong things at the wrong times. But Addie didn't even seem to notice.
I should probably try to be more like her but it's usually not necessary for the kind of people who were popular.
