I sip my creamed coffee lightly, coco bean scent fills the air making my nose twitch. I wave to the server so I can get more coffee, I've always had a thing for creamy iced coffee but no one ever knew. I come to this coffee shop every day in the afternoon so I'm a regular here, the server gives me a thumbs up and disappears in the kitchen. I smile to myself, she's so nice. Humming to the background music, someone taps on my shoulder, making me twirl my head around like an owl. It's a girl about my age, I give her a confused look.
"Uh hi, could I sit with you?," she asks quietly. I nod and pat the seat next to me welcoming her to sit down, she smiles with her large glass of peach tea, and sits down facing me ready for a conversation. While I took another drink of my almost empty coffee I noticed she was staring at me contently with her face bright, I set down my coffee.
"Sooo, who are you?," I question. She looked like she was zoned out, but when I speak she is snapped back and looks at me.
"I'm Vallianna, but you can call me Val. I just moved into this state and decided to be friendly and meet some peeps, heh this is the only place I really saw," she says. Val gives me a depressing look and gets up, I turn my head. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you," Val mumbles. I get up and and grab her sleeve stumbling, she tries to yank away but I'm held on too tight.
"No, stay. I would want to have another friend to have," I demand smiling. She smiles back and sits down, when the waiter comes she orders a muffin.
"I'm so sorry....what is your name?," Val says.
"Oh I'm Tyler heh you can call me Ty for short," I say chuckling.
"I just get that kind of way Ty, I feel so bad now."
"No its totally fine, hey do you wanna meet my boyfriend Josh? He would love to meet you," I ask politely.
"Yeah, why not," Val agrees nodding her head.
"Well I will let you eat your food, but then we can walk back to my place," I say smiling.
Right when Val is about to put money into the bill, I slip my hand under and put a check in. "Please, it's the least I could do for someone new here," I say smirking. She catches my smirk and squints her eyes in a joking way, I roll my eyes. With her by my side we walk outside and on the sidewalk, our feet almost synchronized while walking. When we pass a playground that is half way to my house, her eyes light up and she dashes over to it. I run after her and yell, "What are ya doin' over there?!" She ignores my question, and just swings on the swing set letting the wind take her. I climb onto the swing next to her and start rocking, I notice her eyes are closed and a smile is planted on her face looking so, peaceful. She starts dragging her feet on the ground and starts stopping, when she is fully stopped I stop too.
"I don't know what came over me it's just...," Val mumbles softly not finishing.
"It's just, what?," I ask.
"I grew up in this town, this was my childhood playground. I couldn't resist going on these swings I loved," Val says proudly. I nod my head, no wonder she ignored me.
"I fully understand Val, do you still want to see my house?," I ask.
"Yeah of course! We can go now," she says. I get up and reach out my hand, she grabs it lightly and we start walking on the sidewalk. The house is still not in reach but suddenly I see a worried Josh coming our way in a car, he pulls over next to us and takes a deep breath of relief.
"Oh my gosh Ty! I was so worried, I couldn't see you at the coffee shop or the arcade! I'm do happy you're here!," he exclaims also sounding tired from looking for me. He soon opens his car door and reels me into a giant tight bear hug, I pull in closer feeling the tears from his eyes roll down my neck and back. Then after we have a quick kiss and Josh notices Val, he gives her a glare. "Who is this?" He asks angrily. Val looks at the ground shyly, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.
"This is Val, I met her at the coffee shop. She is new to the state and we were just about to go to the house, so she could meet you!," I exclaim with a grin. Josh raises an eyebrow, I get nervous he thinks I'm dating her or something. When he's done eyeballing Val, he reaches his hand out with a smile.
"It's nice to meet you Val, I'm sorry if I'm making you uncomfortable but I know what its like to be new," he says nicely. Val looks up slowly, interested in what he's saying. "Before I met Tyler I lived in Wisconsin, but now I live here in California!," he exclaims while extending his arms to show everywhere. She nods her head with a slight side smile, probably thinking how relatable Josh is. After a while of all of us talking and getting to know each other, we tightly stuff ourselves into Josh's fancy gold Lamborghini and drove to me and Josh's house.
