Major spoilers here guys.
One second. That's all it took. One second, and a shard of wood. And then she fell, her face turning ashen and her lips going pale.
There was nothing he could do; he knew that. But that didn't keep him from reaching toward her, didn't stop him from trying to hold her one last time as she slipped away. He wanted to punch something. Hell, he wanted to kill something.
He knew she was there before he actually saw her. Of course she would be there.
"Damon?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. He turned slowly, cracking a small smile.
"Elena Gilbert," he replied, standing up and dusting himself off. "Not the first person I expected to see here."
"I could say the same about you," she replied with a laugh. But the jokes were over as soon as they started. Elena embraced Damon, silent tears slipping down her cheeks.
"What's wrong?" Damon asked, frowning.
"I didn't think I'd ever see you again."
So Damon held her and let her cry, even though he knew neither of them could feel it. They stayed like that off a long time, but neither of them cared. Then, they were lifted off the ground by some unknown but gentle force.
There was bright, blinding white light, and then there was nothing.
