My breath came in short,
Quick gasps.
My heart started beating so hard,
It felt like I just finished running three miles.
Teeth grazed my lower lip,
And stayed there,
As I stared at the text message for a few minutes.
I would absolutely love to talk to Alex on the phone.
To actually hear his voice—
That’s a dream.
But that’s all it could be—
A dream.
How was I supposed allow him to call me?
Would I even be able to say hello?
I need to break out of my shell.
And the sooner, the better.
Inhale.
Close eyes.
Exhale.
“I suppose…” I responded.
Slowly, my heart rate calmed.
Not completely, but enough to where,
I didn’t feel like I would pass out.
However, I began to shake.
My fingers trembled over my keyboard.
Eyes remained glued to the phone,
As I waited for it to ring.
When it did,
I jumped.
And hesitated to answer.
“H-hello?” I said.
My voice trembled.
“Hi, Laney,” Alex said.
At that moment,
My heart stopped beating all together.
As cliché as it sounds,
He had a beautiful voice.
It was deep, but not too deep.
And the way he said my name,
It was—
Soft.
I don’t know how else to explain it.
“It’s okay,” he said, “You don’t have to be afraid…”
“I know,” I replied.
Slowly, I exhaled,
And felt myself relax a little.
“How are you doing?” Alex asked.
He spoke slowly,
Probably knowing that this was too much for me to handle.
“I’m… Okay, I think,” I said.
