My paws hit the forest floor with a thump.
I had shifted in mid-air. Something I had taught myself when I would sneak out to explore the woods when I was younger. I used to jump from the balcony around midnight because it was a quieter and easier way to escape unnoticed. I intentionally landed in front of the brawl involving my father, Jaxx and Keller. This allowed me to face the incoming herd. If I could hold the Wolfsbane Pack back as much as possible, that gives them a chance to finish off the first five wolves.
"Come around to the back. We need back up. And hurry!"
I mind-linked the other pack guards who were still keeping watch. There was no more time to keep watch. Our alpha and the two most valuable men in our pack are in immense danger. I do not care if the other doors are left unguarded because the chance of a vacant wolf entering is small. Why would they want to go inside when the biggest threats are outside?
"On our way." One of the pack guards responded almost immediately.
The ground shook from under me as the herd grew closer. I could feel my heart beating rapidly against my rib cage. I had always pretended to have opponents when training, but now I actually have real opponents. The reality was setting in that I could possibly die within the next few minutes, and the thought terrified me. The wolves did not seem fazed by me standing there in fighting position with my hind legs crouched. They only saw me as a weak she-wolf. That's fine. Being underestimated only makes me fight harder.
I turned my head to the side to see if my father, Jaxx, and Keller had noticed. They hadn't. They had critically injured two wolves, leaving them on the floor taking in shallow breaths. It was not long before the blood loss would catch up to them and they would die. This left a three versus three battle. I need to get their attention without distracting them from their task at hand. I took in a deep breath and let out a long, loud howl.
The noise bounced off the trees, echoing throughout the woods. The six wolves behind me stopped and looked my way. My father, Jaxx and Keller stared at me with wide eyes, noticing the incoming wolves from around the trees. I could see the anger evident in my father's eyes by the way his upper lip curled, but it was quickly replaced with concern. Without a second glance, they finished off the three remaining wolves quickly and ran toward me.
"Sage get back into the house NOW!"
I ignored the mind-link my father sent me and shook my head. I faced the Wolfsbane Pack again while getting into fighting position. I felt sharp teeth on my tail pulling me back. I whimpered under the pain and dug my nails into the dirt to keep myself steady. I was not backing out of this fight, even if it risked my life. My life is nothing more than sitting around and watching. It's not like my life is worth living anyway. I can make my legacy right here, right now. The alpha's daughter who died fighting for her pack.
"You can't take them! Get behind us!"
Keller's mind-link went through one ear and out the other. I have already made up my mind. There is no going back now.
With one last look at my brother, I launched myself forward toward the incoming wolves. I ran as fast as possible. I didn't really have a plan, but I knew that I had to take out enough wolves before they reached the house. I aggressively ran head first into one wolf, causing it to whimper and fall beneath me. I took the skin of its back beneath my sharp teeth and threw it up in the air, hoping it would break a few bones from the fall.
