Are You Alive?

Just wanted to say that this is my most recent poem as of July 7, 2018. I was feeling really down when I wrote this.

Written June 18, 2018

Your heart may beat
Constant and strong,
Steady and sure
Like a self-assured song

Writer
Who knows what it's all about,
How to live within and without,
How to keep a system flowing
Through trials and tribulations
In
Out

Even as the system works,
And your body does its work
Are you alive?

In a world where no one cares for the living
Where society shuns until existence is taken from you
Are you alive?

Through all the times you party,
And the aftermath- fun?- hardly,

Ask yourself, count one to five and say
"Are you alive?"

Sometimes, I feel like I'm not.
At times it's all pretense
My heart harder than the shell of a coconut
The insides softer than rotting tomatoes worth less than five-pence,
And still I ask myself
"Are you alive?"

Living, but done.
In the present, but gone.
Kelly Akoum go have fun
But are you alive?

Today, the answer to that question
Is no.
