The sun had long since dipped over the horizon, shrouding the city with a veil of darkness and I found myself leaning against the roof access door of one of the taller buildings in the city shivering my butt off while waiting for something, anything to happen. A freezing wind had kicked up and no amount of physical exertion prevented the icy burn from turning my face red from pain, so I'd retreated to a place where I had the wind at my back and where my face could be shielded from the harsh night air. It's not like I was doing anything productive anyway. At least I could keep an eye out for a little while longer.
Stupid barrier. I found myself thinking. Why couldn't there be even a couple of monsters in the whole city? I needed something to do or I'd lose my ever-loving mind.
I didn't even get the whole 'the city is protected from all things Ancient Greek because it has its own heroes' crap they had given me has a half-baked excuse for their indirect banishment of me. I get that they didn't like handling everything that went on in the city, but they didn't handle anything well anyway. It didn't make sense that they put up a barrier to keep monsters out unless there was something they were trying to keep out.
My thoughts swelled to the front of my mind. The gods didn't care about anyone enough to put a barrier up to keep things out so that meant they put up the barrier to keep something inside. I shivered at the thought. If that were the case then the gods really were just using me to do their grunt work and I probably had to fight another primordial being or their spawn.
Whatever. It wasn't worth worrying about after what I'd gone through already. Nothing would be able to shock me anymore. There could be mind-controlling aliens invading the Earth just for fun and I probably wouldn't be phased. I would probably be completely weirded out and scared for my mom and friends back home, but definitely expecting something that weird to happen.
A gust of wind howled as it blew against my makeshift shelter and I couldn't hold back a yawn. The way the cold air bit at my face reminded me of Alaska and I didn't like it. Something about my memories of when I had no memories just messed with my head and I didn't like it at all. It always set me in an off mood and I usually did something stupid. If I was being completely honest, I was in the middle of something stupid and should have packed up, but the thrill of being the hero without being the prophesized hero was too much fun to let it go, and I really wanted to catch a glimpse of real superheroes.
I hadn't managed to catch even a tiny glimpse of the Dynamic Duo which almost made me feel a little bad about my abilities as a world savior and I began to question their authenticity and whether or not I'd been told a lie. Sure, they theoretically had an entire city to patrol, but I didn't catch even the slightest hint as to their activity nearby. No tied up criminals, no fighting in an alleyway, no nothing. There wasn't even a whisper about them in the streets. It was almost like they didn't even really exist.
If they didn't that'd be just another reason to hate my day. Betrayal, manipulation, and false hope were things I was all too familiar with and I really just needed a break from it all. For once I just wanted to be able to do my own thing in the new world the gods had thrown me in for no reason at all. I really just didn't need any more of that.
It was strange though that I hadn't even heard of them on the streets.
I shook my head. The late hour was starting to get to me. I was being delusional, of course, they were real. I'd seen several newspapers on the ground with headlines about Batman and Robin, and gift shops had merchandise dedicated to them. They were real... really real, Dick had said so. They probably just had a late-night patrol with a wide area to cover, so we just hadn't crossed paths yet. If I waited a little bit longer, my chances might increase of catching sight of the duo.
