I usually stuck out like a sore thumb at parties, generally spending my time in a corner by myself hoping someone would come over and talk to me. Nobody ever did. So why I had agreed to attend the birthday party of a person I didn't even know was beyond me. I think it was the puppy dog eyes my best friend Miya had given me.

So on one exceptionally warm Friday night near the end of November, instead of sitting at home crying over The Fault in Our Stars again I was sat in the living room of some guy called Michael, trying to not get sat on and/or molested by all the drunken males. Someone had put a red solo cup in my hand earlier in the night, which I still hadn't taken a drink of in fear of getting drugged. I sighed, standing up and walking towards the area I guessed was the kitchen. It looked a lot less crowded than the living room and hopefully I could find Miya. She had talked me into coming and then left me as soon as we'd gotten there. Some friends she was.

"Excuse me," I said to a couple who decided kissing in the doorway was a completely great idea. Fucking PDA. "Jesus christ," I shoved through a little gap between one of their backs and a wall and found that the kitchen was just as crowded as everywhere else. I saw a guy with neon blue hair sat on the counter, taking a swig of beer. I decided he looked a lot less scary than everyone else and approached him.

"Sorry, have you seen Miya Jones?"

"She left about a half hour ago with some guy, why?" He asked.

"She was my ride," I sighed, squeezing the bridge of my nose. Why was I so surprised? She always did this.

"Oh shit really?" He frowned. "Do you live far?"

"Bout a half hour east of here,"

"I'm sure I can find someone sober enough to drive you home," He jumped down off the counter. "I'm Michael by the way," He set his beer bottle down and wiped his hands on his jeans. "Avery," I gave him a small smile. "Happy birthday!"

"Thanks," He laughed. "You can go wait in the garden if you like, nobody goes out there,"

"How come?"

"I have a dog, he's not vicious or anything so you'll be fine,"

"Okay," I nodded, crossing my arms. "I'll be in the garden,"

"I'll come get you once I find someone to give you a lift," And then he disappeared among the crowds of people. I walked towards the back door, opening it slightly and slipping outside. I was immedietly jumped on by a small brown and white dog.

"Hello," I greeted the dog, squatting down to pet him. He barked happily.

"Goku!" A voice came from the end of the garden. A figure came out of the shadows and approached us.

"Is that your name? Goku?" I scratched his chin. "You're actually named after a Dragon Ball Z character that is amazing,"

"You know Dragon Ball Z?" I glanced up to see a tall figure towering over me and I stood up straight to find that even in heels I was still quite a bit smaller than him. I tried my best not to choke on air at the sight of him. He was really pretty. In a way only guys like him could be. His dark hair was spiked to the side slightly and his smile made me feel things.

"I do," I nodded. "Is that so hard to believe?"

"No, no," He shook his head. "You just don't look like the type to watch anime,"

"I get that a lot," I laughed. "I'm Avery,"

"Calum, nice to meet you,"

"You too," I gave him a smile.
