Sunday quickly rolled around. I had nothing against a Sunday but I hated what I had to do every Sunday. Dinner at dads.
I also had no hateful feelings towards my father but going there required me to tune into my patience a little more than usual.

When I was 3 years old my father and mother split up. My mother told me that she couldn’t put me in danger raising me in a notorious mafia house. They had many fights about this fact and in the end they just decided it was best for me to just move away.
It wasn’t long after that my dad fell madly in love with another woman and had 2 children with her. My mom on the other hand never remarried. She told me that she still loved my dad too much to give her heart to another man.

Exactly 10 years after my dad left my mother died of cancer. When she found out it wasn’t long maybe a month until she died. It was hard for me because I had to see her die and there was nothing that I could do about it.

I met my father for the first time at her funeral. I didn’t speak to him. I couldn’t. That was also the day where I had to pack up my life and go and live with him and his family.
I hated him for a very long time. I never understood how he could just give up on her and me. Above everything else my new siblings hated me and made my life a living hell. I never told my father about how Cole would tease me or make fun of me at school. Or how Ashlee always bullied me into doing her homework.
So when I hit 21 my dad gave me the club and I got my ass out of that house and away from everything. Cole became a part of the mafia of course and Ashlee just pretends that I don’t exist. The only times when I see either of them is at the Sunday family dinners and when I have to deliver the monthly income to my father.
I lounged around the whole day dreading the evening. Around 4 I jumped into the shower and got ready.

When I arrived at the mansion I sat in the car for a few minutes contimplating if I should go in or if I should fake my own death.
“Just go in and get it over with,it’s only once a week” said Baba from the front. I opened the door and while getting out I muttered “I hate Sundays”. I could hear Baba laughing in the car.

Before I got to the front door it opened and I was let in by the maid.
“Mr teller is already at table” she said and closed the door behind me. I wasn’t late but I wasn’t on time either. I always made sure I came when dinner was ready and left after a drink with my father in his study.
When I entered the dinning room everyone was already seated and waiting for the dinner to be served.
“Ah Ann Marie.Welcome.” my father said and stood up. He came towards me and gave me a kiss on the cheek before he led me to my usual seat next to him.

Cole and Ashlee didn’t greet me and neither did I. They just gave me their usual hateful glare before they went back to their phones. The rest dinner went quietly with no further words said.

After a few years my father found out about how the both of them treated me. It immediately stopped but I could still feel the hate in the air.
After dinner my father said “How about a night cap in my office” like always. “Yeah sure” I said and got up. I grabbed my handbag and followed him to his office.

He poured us a shot of bourbon “How have you been?”
“I’ve been good” I said quietly.
“And the business?” he asked.
“It’s doing great.” I said and walked towards the big window that looked out on the back yard. My mother used to tell me how I ran out there eating more grass than food. Every time I came here I tried to imagine how it was with just the three of us living here.

I didn’t know how long I stood there staring out the window when I felt my father’s presence near me. “I can still remember you when you were 3. Running away from your mother while she was trying to keep you from eating the mushrooms that grew in the grass. “

I looked at him because he never before spoke about her. He was still staring out the window when he said “You remind me so much of her”.
I looked back towards the yard “I miss her so much” I whispered. The pain of losing your mother never goes away. It just gets easier to live with.

He put his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer to him and kissed my forehead. “I miss her too baby girl. Every second of every day”.
“I know that you and Cole don’t get along but I’m going to have to send him to the club a few times to see how the underground business there works.”
“Joy” I said with sarcasm clearly dripping off every damn letter.
“Oh come on. He has relaxed a bit since high school” my dad said walking back to his desk.
“He’s still a douche bag dad.”
“He’s your brother Ann Marie. Besides I’m going to retire soon so he needs to know these things.”

“And what makes you think that I will continue this underground business when you retire?”
“I know you won’t because in spite of everything that he has put you through he’s still your brother and I know that you love him. If you stop the club business almost 50 percent of his money will wither.”

“Maybe being average will knock him back down to earth”
“Ann Marie…”
“Fine dad” I said with my hands risen in defeat. “Just tell him to stay out of my way. I have a business to run and part of yours too”
“He’ll be there tomorrow at 9”
“Great. I’m gona go. All this talk of family has given me a headache” I said walking towards him and kissing him on the cheek.
I grabbed the papers for this week’s mafia business and made my way to the door.

“I love you Ann Marie” dad said with a smile on his face.
“Yeah yeah I love you too and all that”
When I came outside Baba was already there with the car running. I got in and closed the door. “So? How was it?” he asked.
“I should have faked my death” I said and he chuckled.
