Chapter 8:

“Are we there yet?” I smile as Elena asks that question for the third time on this short thirty minute car ride. I spare a glance over and bite my lip at the innocent, scared and yet excited look on her face.

“Can I take this off? Seriously,” her hands move up to the blindfold I had asked her to wear before we started driving. I immediately slap her hand lightly making her yelp in surprise.

“I will turn around if you take that off,” I threaten jokingly, turning my attention back to the road. It should be around here somewhere…

“Oh my god! Jeez be careful!” Elena squeals as we go over yet another bump in the road thanks to all the construction going on.

“Can you at least warn me when shit like that happens?”

“Now, now watch your language,” I chide, smiling. I don’t know why but it seems weird when Elena cusses. I always pictured her as an innocent angel of some sort so everytime she cusses it’s like a piece of that image gets chipped off.

“Well could you just…drive more carefully now?” her demand turned more into a question as her voice rose as we entered another dip.

“Sorry,” was the only thing I can say as I continued to navigate my way in the traffic. It wasn’t technically my fault though. I’m normally a good driver! It’s just the damn car; the tiny Zip car obviously isn’t as durable as my car back home.

One minute doesn’t even go by before I hear Elena’s voice again. “But seriously, how long until we get there?”

“Soon, very soon,” I say in my best ominous tone while using one hand to tap her on the shoulder gently.

Her only response was to huff loudly and cross her arms over her chest. From what I can see, her bottom lip juts out in a pout and I have to try and hold back the sudden urge to pull her into a kiss. I just don’t want to crash and kill us, nothing else.

We drive silently for the next ten minutes before I finally see the sign I’ve been waiting for. I quickly exit off the freeway and slow down as more cars continue to congest the streets. I spared a glance to my left and right and notice that all the cars passing us had little kids in the back seat. Not surprising considering where we were going but nerve-wracking nonetheless.

I think Elena has like a sixth sense or something because the second we get off the freeway and slow down her body tenses with anticipated excitement. A goofy smile becomes plastered on her face and I chuckle internally. Needless to say, I was pretty damn excited as well.

It takes another five minutes of stop and go traffic on the local streets before we finally pull into a parking spot remotely close to our destination. I take one glance at it and smile, those warm fuzzy memories as a kid coming back to me. But those memories, as friendly as they were in my mind, left me nervous. Most people don't like going to these types of things, especially at our age. Most of my friends prefer the park, the movie theater, a nice restaurant or even a night at home; and if I ever took them here just to play, which albeit happened a few times, they would look at me like I was crazy and walk away. But I don't know with Elena, I felt like I could be myself and with that comes allowing me to bring her to one of my favorite places in the world; no matter how childish it seems to be.

Now I just really hope she likes it as well.

The second I cut the engine off, Elena squeals as the smile, if possible, grows wider on her face.
