Chapter 14:

            My body was paralyzed, jaw hanging agape. What in the world was Jaki doing here? I must be dreaming. Yeah, this is all a dream. I am going to wake up and realize I’m still all alone in my jail cell. I sighed, aiming my self-made dagger towards my bleeding heart.

            “Don’t you dare do it girl,” A swipe hits my hand and I feel the dagger fly out of my hands, hitting the ground with a loud clang. At first, I’m desperate to get my dagger back and finish the deed but I’m also pissed off at whoever slapped it away. I looked up, ready to bitch this person out but my eyes widen to the size of dinner plates as I see who it is.

            Nick.

            “Let’s go come on,” his hands are under my arms, lifting me up into a standing position. His voice is different compared to before but I didn’t really bother to think about it. I was being saved.

            “Why?” I croak softly but they don’t seem to hear. I feel my body gets dragged along like a rag doll as the scenery around me blurs into one. Everything looked the same: the plain rough walls, the steel cold jail bars, even the landscape outside the building looked the same: plain, brown and boring.

            Warmth hits my pale skin as the sound of an engine roaring to life hits my ears. It was then that I realized we were in a car. I was in the backseat, Jaki was in the passenger and Nick was the driver.

            What? My head hurts, maybe I am dreaming.

            “What are you guys doing here?” I manage to speak after a few minutes of Nick speeding down the highway to who knows where.

            “What does it look like?” Jaki responds perhaps a bit too harshly. Her head turns just a fraction to stare at me and that’s when I notice it. Her eyes were bloodshot, heavy bags under her eyes. Her skin was limp, sagging under gravity’s pressures. She was tired, no she was beyond tired; she looked as if she was ready to just keel over and hibernate for the next five months.

            Questions fired in my head like bullets. But the one hitting me clearest had to come out first.

            “Why?”

            “What do you mean by why?” Nick responds, eyes still on the road. I could see his fingers twitching gently against the steering wheel. He was nervous.

            “Why did you save me?” I ask again, my voice coming back to me, self-esteem rebuilding.

            “We’re your friends Amber…”

            “Bullshit,” I cut Jaki off instantly. “If you were my friends, you wouldn’t have ditched me the second I came out,”

            That was it. There was the trigger. Both of them had tensed, shoulders rising in surprise. From the rearview mirror, I could see Nick’s eyes shift from Jaki back to the road, nervous. I could only assume Jaki was sharing those glances.

            The pieces fit. Not how I would have figured but it was the only thing that made sense.

            “Are you guys…gay?”

            I hit it, right in the head. The two of them let out soft gasps before quickly saying no, shaking their heads a little too vigorously.

            This time it was my eyes that widened to the size of dinner plates, maybe even bigger.

            “You guys…are…”
