Chapter 15:
The door swung open wide as I walked in to the room. Or at least, what I thought was her room. The humble abode that once was full of life was now bare, matching a plain, neutral dorm room similar to what it probably looked like when people moved in in the beginning of the year. In fact, if I didn’t notice the little puff of black hair jetting out of the small closet, I would have thought I walked into a room on display for the new freshmen.
It seemed like Elena hadn’t noticed me because she continued to be doing whatever she was doing in her closet. Boxes surrounded her feet so I could only assume she was packing to go home.
Home…California…
My heart was pounding wildly in my chest as I watched Elena’s slender frame straighten up to a standing position. Her hair looked like it had that same silky smoothness that she had when I first met her, so perfect. It was so perfect that I kind of wanted to run over and just start stroking it as if she was a little adorable puppy; my little adorable puppy.
Then I realized how awkward this would be if she had caught me standing there staring. I cleared my throat and knocked on the door.
Her reaction made my heart jump. Her eyes widened like deer caught in the headlights. Honestly, her startled reaction made me melt with happiness.
“Hey,” I say meekly, starting the conversation since I knew she wasn’t going to.
I expected a warm smile and eyes sparkling with happiness but all I got was a cold look that chilled my blood.
“Hey,” her voice was laced with such sadness, pain. It seemed so closed off and distant as if she wanted nothing to do with me.
I gulped, my hands lightly clenching into fists. “Are you…busy?”
“Why?”
Unfinished business my mind wanted to say. But I pushed it away for fear I would push the wrong button; I was walking on broken glass here.
“I just want to talk,”
I heard a sigh escape her lips and I thought she would say yes but instead she just turned back to searching through her boxes without even a straight answer.
Answerless and heartbroken, I wanted to leave but my heart was telling me to stay, to fight and win back the heart of the girl whom I wanted to live with for the rest of my life. So I stayed. I didn’t speak a word; I just stood there and waited. Because in all honesty, I would wait forever just to hear her speak my name just one more time.
One minute passed. Then two minutes, five minutes. Ten minutes went by and I was still sitting in utter silence. I could tell Elena knew I was still there. Her shoulders were tense and her movement was rigid, robotic like. Her breathing seemed a lot more ragged than before and that was the easiest sign to me that she was nervous. But I knew she could go days without talking to me no matter how close I was. So maybe it’s time to take some action.
Opportunity came conveniently when Elena had to take some boxes down off the top of her closet. Being only five feet tall, Elena was struggling to grab the boxes from all the way up there. She looked just like a little kid wanting to get a cookie out of the cookie jar. She was balancing herself on one leg, on her tiptoes as her right hand was stretched up in attempts to gain one cardboard box that just wouldn’t cooperate with her. I could at least say that I was a bit amused.
