When aquaponics appears to be an attractive option, local feasibility studies should be taken before investing in any demonstrations or support programs. Such assessments should consider whether aquaponics in a specific location will have any advantages over hydroponics, normal agriculture or normal aquaculture.

To date, aquaponics has been pursued by aquaculturists through aquaculture agents, despite he fact that it's primarily a horticultural activity. There has to be a rebalancing of effort and support, through agricultural training, and also through joint initiatives of fisheries and farms where appropriate.
