"Someone just get Alan, I don't wanna talk to you." Jo complains, pushing the nurse's hand away.
"You have a fever of a hundred and one point two." The nurse tells her. "You have to let us figure out what's happening with you."
"I want my uncle. I don't want you. I want Alan. Get me Alan. Alan!" She calls weakly, starting to cry and shake.
"We have Dr. Finely coming to check on you. He's an excellent doctor and our other resident here at GH."
"Alan! I need Alan."
"Ms. Jerome, I need you to calm down. Your normal doctor isn't available right now but I can help you. We're just giving an IV of fluids and were gonna cool you down. Okay, we'll take good care of you."Nadia rests her head on PJ's shoulder, staring towards the OR. Neil comes back, three cups of coffee in his arms. His siblings both take one. They settle back into their seats, the minutes dragging one once again. It takes a while, but Lucas eventually comes out, slightly shaking.
PJ helps him sit, his hand staying on Lucas' shoulder. "We managed to stabilize your father, but blood loss was extensive and there's a lot of damage. But, but your mom, she lost too much blood before paramedics got there. There was nothing we could do, she passed away."
Nadia buries her face in PJ's neck, starting to sob. PJ pulls Neil in too. He presses his forehead to Neil's head, letting himself cry. Lucas pulls away, closing his eyes and breathing deeply. "Your dad's being cleaned up and taken to a room, it'll be a few minutes before he's ready, but you can go in and see your mom if you want." He turns and walks away, his hands shaking and knees weak.
"Nadi, I wanna go see Mom." PJ says softly, getting up, letting his siblings go to each other. He walks towards the OR, hesitating with every move he makes. He gets to the sheet covered body and pauses, trying to prepare himself.
He lifts the sheet off her face, touching her cheek. "M-Mommy? I, I love you. Lucas said Dad's gonna be okay, the cops told us you, you saved him. Dad's gonna be mad you saved him and not yourself. Nad-Nadi and Neil are really in shock and all that. I guess my shock is different. I, um, I needed to see you one more time. I, I'm sorry Mamma. And thank you. You made me better. I wanted to make you proud, but I messed up. It took you being ashamed take make me turn myself around, and I think I did pretty good. You always said you wanted to, wanted to provide aid overseas, I did it to make you proud. I think I did that, I hope at least. Dad always said I was a Mamma's boy, I was. Still, it took me a while to earn your love back. I don't blame you for how you reacted to me hurting Jenna, it was fair. I screwed up, but I'm so glad I got you back. I'm glad Toby had you. I don't think I could've been a good father if you hadn't been my mother. I'm gonna make sure that Dad gets better, I know it's what you would've wanted. I'm keep making you proud, Mom. I promise. Amaya and I are gonna have that baby, have a real family this time. For you. I know you fought to make our family what it is, I won't let it fall apart. I'll be there for Dad, Nadi, Neil, and the kids. I'll do everything I can and more."7:21 a.m.
"Dr. Finley, I'm really sorry about earlier." Jo apologizes, twiddling her thumbs.
"It's no big deal, it was the fever talking. I'm glad you're feeling better. If you need anything, I'm a button press away." He offers, lightly tapping her shoulder and walking out, replaced by Lucas.
Jo smiles at her brother, the look in his eyes telling her something happened. She'd seen the look before, ten years and two months before. She swallows and pulls her legs closer. "What happened?"
Lucas sits on her bed, holding her hands. "Alan and Carla's house was broken into last night, they were attacked. Alan's out of surgery and he should pull through, but Carla didn't. She passed away."
Jo holds back a sob, going limp in Lucas' arms. He holds her there for a long time, just letting her cry, keeping an eye on her heart rate monitor. Eventually she pulls away and wipes her face. "I um, I didn't know if I should tell you or not. I didn't know if you could handle it."
"You have no idea what I can handle. I'm stronger than you could ever imagine. I have been through more shit than you know."
"Calm down, Jo. I know you're strong. What's this horrible thing that's bothering you, other than Carla?" He asks. "Because something was bothering you when I walked in."
"There's more I haven't told you guys. The twins, they aren't my first. I was pregnant once before. I lost the baby. It was about two years ago, Bryson and I had been married less than a year. He didn't want the baby at first and told me to get an abortion, but I refused and threatened to leave him. Eventually he changed his mind and I said I could keep the baby and he would happily raise them. When I was fourteen weeks, we were coming home from the movies when a man attacked us. He knocked Bryson out and came after me. He knocked me down and stomped on my stomach. I woke up in the hospital the next morning and they told me I lost the baby."
"Shit, Jo. Come here." He wraps his arms around her, holding her against him. "I've got you, kid."6:54 p.m.
Alan opens one eye after the other, looking around the room at his kids. He moves his hand until he finds their pile of hands, holding that. They smile at him, trying to stop their building tears. He sighs, smiling back. "You three are perfect, I did something right."
He lays there and catches his breath for a second, his smile never fading. "Your mom's my soulmate." He says, his speech slurred. "She's my hero. She my best friend, ever. She so good. I'm thankful, for her. Where's Mom? Where's she?"
"Dad," Nadia says softly, looking away, "Mom's gone."
Alan grunts as he sits up, the pain he's in clearly displayed on his face. He brings his other hand over and puts it on Nadia's chin, turning her head to face him. "Say that again, but look me in the eyes."
Nadia opens her tear filled eyes. "Mom is gone. She didn't make it."
Alan lays back down slowly, his eyes starting to get glossy. "Wh-where's her ring?"
"The robbers took it. It's the only thing they got." Neil tells him.
Alan nods against his pillow, his eyes rolling back into his skull as he goes limp. PJ touches his brother and sister to get their attention. "Lucas said this might happen. We're supposed to let him sleep. We should all eat something and get home to our kids. We'll tell them tomorrow. Mom wouldn't want us to let this get in the way of us being there for our kids or Dad. For Mom." He says, putting his hand in the middle of them.
"For Mom." Nadia echoes, placing her hand on his.
"For Mom." Neil puts his hand over both of theirs.Sometimes it's not the death that's painful, it's their loved ones having to deal with it.
Mom-lympics
Since I needed a way to break ties, Ani is our tie breaker. (I know the order is messed up, but let's face it, we know who's getting far and who's not. I'm keeping things interesting.)
Ani's reasons:
Jo vs Robin- "I don't like Robin and I know something about Jo from what you've told me that just shows she'd do anything for her babies."
Molly vs Lulu- "Lulu really fought to have a family and be a mother, Molly is much more about the cute kid side of things."
Valerie vs Carla- "I can't really speak ill of the dead and I do appreciate just how hard Carla has worked to be a mother."
Pam vs Zoe- "F**k Pam. She took off and left her daughter, then took her son from his loving father because they were fighting. Pam doesn't put her kids first, or grandkids. Zoe is a doll and I'm gonna protect her with my life."
Anne vs Chloe- "This is no disrespect to people dealing with mental illness, like Anne, but Anne wasn't there for her son. Chloe dealt with her daughter's disability with grace and love while Anne stuck Alan with her husband and detached."This round we're looking at the top half of the brackets.
Alexis vs Lila (Arthur's sister)
Sam vs Carla
Lulu vs Janis (Arthur's mother)
Kiki vs Kristina
