Magic Shop (VRene)

Joohyun, no, Irene takes a short step forward, worried that she will slip and fall. Her fingers gripping tightly around the hand grip on the wall. Her ankle is still killing her even the accident was almost a week ago. She missed a step and fell from the stairs.

Was she careless?

No.

She's just sightless.

It's been 15 years since she lost her sight. It's been 15 years since her world was covered in nothing but black. Fifteen years since she lost the light in her eyes and her heart.

Fifteen years ago, 12 year-old Joohyun was walking around the orphanage she lived in when she saw a car running at high speed toward a boy who seemed younger than her. It seemed the car had some trouble with its brake. Without even thinking of her own safety, she jumped and pushed the boy away. Before she could run away, the car made contact with her body, causing her to be thrown 5 meters away before her head hit a stone. Before she lost consciousness, the boy had approached her, crying, while holding her hand tight.

"Noona..."

Joohyun, with a blur image of the boy, smiled and said, "I'm glad you're okay." With that, she closed her eyes and let her mind travelled to the dreamland.

Joohyun woke up when the smell of antiseptics hit her olfactory nerve. She barely could hear the conversation between two people behind the door. One of them is Miss Maria, one of the caretaker in the orphanage. One of them is a male, Joohyun never heard his voice before.

"Is it night or am I dreaming?" Joohyun mumbled to herself. Before she could figure the answer, the door was opened.

"Joohyun, you're awake? Oh praise the Lord! How are you feeling, Joohyun?"

Joohyun was confused. Why was Miss Maria talking as if she's awake? Wasn't she dreaming? Everything's dark anyway.

"Miss Maria?" Her voice wavered.

"Yes, darling?"

"Is it midnight right now? Why don't you turn the light on?"

Instead of answering, Miss Maria started sobbing. Confused and scared, Joohyun reached her hand out. A big hand held hers.

"Miss Joohyun, I'm doctor Kim. Please don't be afraid. I'd like to examine your eyes, is that okay with you?"

"Y-yes, doctor. Please do."

Doctor Kim took his penlight and directed it toward her eyes.

"Do you see the light moving?"

Her heart almost stopped when she realized.

"N-no."

Doctor Kim smiled bitterly, sad because the worst possibility was now reality.

"Miss Maria, can we talk-" he stopped when Joohyun held his white coat.

"Doctor, can you- can you please tell me what happened to me?"

He took her hand in his. "Yes, Miss Joohyun, I'll explain it to you." He took a deep breath before starting, "When you hit your head, it happened to be bleeding inside your skull, in your brain. We managed to stop the bleeding and removed the clot. However, the clot has crushed and damaged your nerve, which usually allows you to see....."

Her hearing suddenly went numb. Her fingers slowly fell beside her body, as tears also fell down her cheeks.

I'm blind.

Her world fell apart.

And behind the door, a little boy was also crying.

The first three years were the hardest for Joohyun. She would cry every single day. Once she had a thought of suicide but the memories of the children in the orphanage managed to bring back her spirit. The first thing she did was changing her name from Joohyun to Irene. She found a new strength in her new name. Then she started to learn how to do simple chores and read Brailles. She tried hard to remember every corner of the orphanage, so she wouldn't need to bother anyone when she wanted to roam around.
