Chapter One

“I feel like a girl at the bar who’s been there too long-”

My phone started ringing, snapping me out of the tense book I was falling deeply into. I waited as it turned green for whoever’s name was about to pop up, prepared to reject the call so that I could continue reading. To my dismay, across my screen popped up “No Caller ID” Who in the right state of mind could be calling me at 10:56pm on a Wednesday night? Unwillingly I answered, sitting quiet for a minute and waiting for the person to say hello or something. Once I lost my patience I just blurred out – “Hello?”

“Hello” – It was a guy, but whom?

“Yeah?” – I asked hoping that I’d catch who it was before getting upset at the fact that I didn't know. I waited...

“Yeah, what’s up? What are you doing?” – He replied as if we knew each other for a long time.

“Laying down.” – I answered puzzled. I wasn't getting anywhere on the phone, and time was ticking. I really wanted to finish this chapter before I fell asleep. – “Who’s this?” – I asked while looking around my room and staring at the TV I’d left on while reading.

“Who’s this? You don't know who this is?” – The voice started to get sharp and loud.

“Nope, I don't. There wasn’t any number when your call popped up so I'm asking you.” – I was scanning my head at who this could possibly be, because I really didn't want to be wrong if I guessed correctly. The fact that I wasn't in a playing mode made the situation a bit more annoying than it probably was.

“Isn't this April?” – He asked a little bit angry. The fact that he knew my name and I didn't know his was pissing me off.

“Yeah.” – I said twisting my face, and forcing back a yawn.

“Ok, then you should know who this is! What do you mean?! Now you don't know my voice?! What the fu-” – Before he could finish his nagging I sighted and cut him off.

“I know who this is now! Calm down; you’re nagging and anger lets me know who you are.” – I managed to turn around onto my stomach, so that I could lay down more comfortably on my bed. I knew I wasn't going to finish my chapter tonight and would have to settle for reading it tomorrow. Jason, the guy, on the phone was my ex. Why we still kept in contact? I had no idea, but we were trying to become friends so I just rolled with it.

“So what are you doing?” – He asked a big deal more calmed.

“I'm reading!” – I spat out a little more loudly than needed.

“Oh...Well I'm bored, you want to come read to me? I would listen and I miss you. I want to see your face.”

“Awww… If you’re so bored then go to sleep!” – I replied while focusing on a green dot I’d found on my wall. Honestly, I really did want to see him and he only lived two blocks away, but didn’t want to let him know that.

“I can’t sleep without you...and I really want to see you....” – His voice trailed off, this didn’t let me know if he was lying or not, but maybe I could believe him. Thinking of this I just gave in. I really wanted to see him even though it’s only been a week since I last saw him. Whenever I’d try to see him he was at work. Every time he’d try I’d be knocked out asleep. I laughed quietly into the phone; part of me honestly knew I couldn't sleep without thinking about him first.

“I’m going to call you back, ok? Once I’m inside the house.” – Knowing from experience that he wasn't far from his house I simply answered ok.

When he hung up my cellphones’ screen turned back white, and the book I was reading popped back up. Getting comfortable and trying to push Jason off my mind I attempted to read again. It didn’t take long for it to start vibrating, in my hand, and for me to realize I wasn’t going to get anywhere farther in the story. – “Ughhhh.”

“We used to be, used to be lovers oh, oh, oh, yeah but now we don't never see each other oh no and I know you think I'm too busy for lov-” Now that was Jason’s ring-tone.

“Hello.” – He said a little happier, guessing he was home now I got out of bed and pulled a pair of jeans up from the floor, next to my bed, and slid them on. Scanning my closet I snatched out a belly shirt that would show off my new belly ring. Sliding into some flats and muting my TV, to hear him better, I opened my room door a little, just enough to see if my mothers’ room door was open. If so I would just lay back down. I looked towards her room and let out a breath, which I didn't know I had held, when I realized her door was closed.

Easing out from my room gently and once ready to close my rooms’ door my sister little voice threw me off guard. – “Uhmm, you’re sneaking out.” – Turning to my sisters’ room I laughed at her and stuck my tongue out at her because I found it funny that she was only seven and already knew I was sneaking out. I wondered why she wasn't asleep yet as I turned and started walking downs the stairs to the back door, grabbing my keys on the way. I’d forgotten that he was on the phone talking, so I listen to him hard trying to catch up with his solo conversation.

The warm air hit my face causing me to smile. It wasn't the first time I snuck out but I was always nervous when I did. Walking out the gate to our yard and hitting the sidewalk I saw his house and wanted to play a mean prank, I started talking. – “I don't want to get out of bed.” – I said whining, as if still on my bed, keeping his house in sight.

“Oh!” – He answered, and you could hear the disappointment in his voice – “Well I’m going to be up for a while then, since you don't want to keep me company” – I loved his voice!

“Shut up and open the door” – I shook my head back and forth picking up my pace. I hated his block at night, it always seemed to creep me out, it’s not a welcoming block at all I’ll tell you that. Either there were a lot of people outside smoking and drinking, or it was a dead silent nothing with no one on the street. Tonight there was a lot of people outside, I hated it when they stared at me. Nervously I pulled my snap back tighter onto my head and tightened my hand around the cell phone walking faster towards his door. Once there and realizing it was open I walked inside and saw him looking inside the fridge with no shirt on. This image sent shivers through my whole body. Hanging up and closed the door behind me I turned to see him looking up from the fridge smiling.
