As mentioned earlier, the is different ways to do a role-play but one of the most important steps is writing the story. I personally prefer to write a good long story so people can get the setting, character and what's happening to the character. For example:
The night was dark. There was barely any stars, and the moon was just a sliver in the sky, casting a unnatural light upon the landscape of the almost as dark city. It was quiet as well. Nothing moved, or made a sound. It was like the city was holding it's breath, as if something was about to happen, something big. Kate realized this, walking home from a friends. Unfortunately for her, she knew nothing of the city and was slightly lost, plus she was nowhere near a transit system or stop, and was too far away to walk back to her friends. So she was stuck."Damn it!" she exclaimed "Now where do I go?"
Including a little dialogue allows others to respond to your character without having to go into a lot of detail. Also, putting he/she allows multiple people to be able to join instead of just a select few.

I've noticed that I used quite a few terms that I haven't discussed yet and I understand if you are confused. DO NOT WORRY!! I will be adding a term list at the very end.
