9. The King and The Assassin

Theo silently watches me as I put on the black, slim gown. It's off-the-shoulder with a dipped v-neck and it hugs my curves well. I slip on a pair of black heels and look in the mirror. I can see Theo sitting on the bed, looking at me. He's wearing a dark blue, almost black, suit with another white, sheer shirt underneath.

My hair stays the same like at the ball before and I have a slight and natural amount of makeup on. Everleigh arrived a few hours ago and we told her and the others about everything. Now all we need to do is actually figure out how I'm going to approach the king.

Theo stands up and walks toward me with two long strides. He stops a few inches away and looks down at me with his violet eyes. He holds a hand out and smiles warmly.

"Let's go." We step out of the room and spot the girls and guys in the hall. They're all clad in formal attire, both couples matching with their partner.

"What's the plan, then?" Everleigh asks, walking next to me.

"Just approach the king and start up a conversation with him, see where that leads." I answer, glancing at my brother who seems to be thinking about something.

"Alex?" I say, letting go of Theo's hand and moving Alexander to the side, away from the others.

"Yeah?" He mumbles as we continue to walk. I loop my arm through his and he finally looks at me.

"What are you thinking about?" I ask as we reach the hall where the party is being held.

"Nothing." He mumbles again, biting his lip.

"Oh, dear brother, I know exactly when you're lying to me. Tell me, what's up?" I press, grabbing a plate and piling it up with all kinds of food.

"I don't think it's a good idea to talk to Trey." He whispers, glancing to my side.

"Why not....?" I confusingly ask, my mouth stuffed with food.

"Because he's been staring at you this entire time." I stop chewing and look to my left, where Alexander kept glancing at. I find Trey looking at me with a suspicious and curious look on his face. Well...

I turn my very unladylike, stuffed to brim with food, face back toward Alexander. I quickly chew and stuff it down, blinking rapidly at how much food I consumed in one gulp.
