When Joe saw what was written on the letter, he paled considerably, and a phone was out before I had the chance to process what was happening. "Rachel, we have an emergency. Rachel, check the rooms." I frowned. I was an emergency? I waited 5 minutes and 24 seconds until I could practically hear the distressed voice of Rachel Morgan- CIA legend, and best headmistress the Gallagher Academy has ever had. Distress? Spies are supposed to be cool. Calm. Collected, only showing true results in dire situations. Then it dawned on me. Apparently, this is a dire situation. Schist.
Okay, so, I may have written something on a piece of paper that had triggered a CODE BLACK. The staff were going crazy and everything was on lockdown. Luckily, the vents closed last so I had enough time, in the midst of the chaos to drop down into the Gallagher Girls and go over to my roomies, who were of course, sitting calmly in the midst of chaos. Okay, maybe I lied, it wasn't chaos. We are Gallagher Girls. Of course it isn't chaos- just whispers and slight shudders at the smallest noises, lucky that I can sneak into almost every situation. I sit down in my desk as Joe surveys the classroom- spotting Diana, Bianca and I sitting calmly and the phone is back up again. "Rachel, she's here." The alarms shut off. The lights came back on. Joe Solomon looks murderous.
He comes over and walks past our desk. "You 3 come with me." I gulp. Joe is scary, sometimes. I mutter a quick, "meet you at the office", and go to hop back in the vents but Joe grabs my wrist and drags me along. "You are not getting out of my sight, Miss Dray." I frown. This sounds important.
We walk back to the Headmistress' office in cold silence- Joe's death grip on my arm never failing. When we get there, he barges straight in, dragging me with the girls following. I stop abruptly when I see that there are 4 people inside the office with Headmistress Morgan. My head pounds loudly- right in the place where I have a bump on it and I attempt to stifle a groan. I fail. The room goes black and white and my legs buckle beneath me. I hear voices in distress, many accusing Joe of something until my head goes back and my hair falls out of it's neatly placed spot- uncovering the intentionally hidden lump on my head. That's when it goes silent and the blackness overtakes.
I am in a room. My room. It's massive with a double bed, and when I catch sight of myself in the mirror, I mentally do a doubletake. 5 years old. I'm 5 years old. No, younger than that. I just look older. It's my birthday. 3rd. I don't know how I know. My mother calls me down stairs and as I run excitedly down the stairs, I can't help but mentally stare around. This place is huge. My mum is waiting in the kitchen-she has gleaming black hair- a colour I'd never seen on her before, but it was obvious that it was real. This was who she was. She smiled and kissed me on the forehead when I came barrelling into her legs.
"There are some people that I'd like you to meet, Katarina." I smiled. I'd always loved my birthdays. I got to meet new people. Ones that are older than mum but still look as if they could stay mum's age forever. They were always nice and they always hung around- though most of the times I wasn't able to talk to them and they were in black uniforms.
In walked 4 people. Young ladies. Around 23 years old. The same 4 people that I saw just before I blacked out. Now I know. These are memories, not strange dreams. I've met theses people before. On my 3rd birthday, but I don't remember them. Mum turned to them, then hugged them all, one by one. Mum never hugs the people that come over.
"This is Cammie, Liz, Macey and Bex", she says, smiling. So I smile too, because if mum likes them, then I do too.
An invasion of voices. A pounding headache. I remember what happened and immediately open my eyes. Everyone is looking down at me, concern etched on their faces. I sit up and smile, though it turns into a grimace as I wave them off and stand up, even though it hurts my head to do so.
