Zaleucus was one of the first rulers to give his people a written law. One of the laws he had made was against adultery. He said that if someone commits adultery, then both his eyes should be taken out.

One day, the king faced  problem. His own son was found guilty of adultery and the king was caught in predicament. He could not just let his son off the hook because then, people would see that he was unjust, but he also loved his son and didn't want to see him hurt.

Once again, the king did something unexpected. He ordered that only one of his sons eyes be taken out and- one of his own eyes be taken out too. Because he loved his son, he was willing to share his punishment.

Justice had been done and Zaleucus had shown his love for his son. As we saw, real love involves cost, but real love also involves sacrifice.
