You weren't sure how long you've been asleep but something caused you wake up with a jolt and you realized you were drenched in sweat. As you tried to sit up properly, you felt an iron like grip around your waist holding you down. The more sober you got, the more you came to the realization that you were in Roberto's room, with him sleeping peacefully next to you. Relief washed over your tumbled feelings and you threw your arms around him hugging him as tight as you could, burying your face in his chest as tears continued to fall.

But the impact has shook him out of his slumber as he held you back, stroking your back gently, inquiring what was it that was traumatizing you. All you could do was mumble an apology into his chest as you weren't yourself enough yet to let go of him.

“I'm sorry, I shouldn't have… blown up like that earlier… but don't leave me. I'm sorry, Roberto, I'm really…”

But his grip only tightened as you spoke in a muffled voice and when he spoke his voice calm, there was more worry as to why you were clinging to him for dear life, as to what caused you so much fear.

“Shhh Y/N, it's okay. I'm not going anywhere. It's alright, shh, it's alright Y/N.”

“But… I- all I did was hurt…”

As he sat up pulling you with him against his chest, you could hear his heart beat faster than normal and you looked up to see pain in his eyes as well.

“It is me, isn't it? I am the one who's putting you into trouble all the time? You can't possibly think I'm right for you anymore, isn't it?”

“Roberto, no, when I said we won't go out as often if you…”, you lowered your face, unable to see the lonely look he had, just as he did in his office, one morning a few days ago, as you were telling him to put his duties first. “…it was hard to watch you get scolded by Alberto all the time, so I thought…”

He interrupted your words by tilting your face upward to meet his. As you looked up at him, you could see him struggling to find the words to say something that he'd kept locked up within for a while.

“I know we made up before but I… need to know. Do you really don't think I'm too much to put up with?”

That weren't what you were expecting to hear and you started for a moment looking at him in confusion. He sighed as he continued.

“I'm not like the rest of them, I seem to be fooling around all the time…”

“Roberto, no, that's not true…”

But his words flowed like he waited for an eternity to tell you all of this, his deepest fears and insecurities. Every word was like a needle in the heart for you and you realized what had been lacking in your part to fill the emptiness inside of him.

“After that day, whenever I feel lonely without my mother… I-I look at the necklace to feel her presence with me. All of my escapades were to get away from my despair, to somewhere less painful and not to evade my duties.”
Your hand found it's way to his cheek as you listened to his words. He leaned forward touching his forehead to yours and closed his eyes before continuing.

“But then I met you and… and everything changed. I forgot the pain that I was feeling for a long time, it was like I healed completely. Even now, your presence makes me feel safe and loved. Just keeping close to you makes me so happy I could cry…”

Those last words were a tearful whisper and you felt his teardrops on your cheek. As you wiped his tears he felt so weak and vulnerable in your arms. No, not because he was crying but the fact that you're his strength and he's afraid of losing it. Your heart clenched seeing the deep wounds he still had and your inability to help them to cure.

A new resolve in heart you looked at your husband feeling a burning need to protect him from his past and himself. You pressed a slow, lingering kiss to each of his eyelids and felt him tremble slightly in your hold. When he opened his eyes to look at you, his eyes were swimming, his pain still obvious to you.

“Roberto”, you said in a coarse whisper, “Would you forgive me for causing you so much pain? For not realizing how you felt even though I'm your wife?”

He squeezed his eyes tightly as your palm cupping his cheek became drenched in more of his tears. You could see that he couldn't get the words out and was fighting something. His hold on you tightened but he said nothing. He just sat there, his face still between your hands, his expression pathetic. You could feel how much you mean to him and the dread it caused him to lose you. Unable to look at him in so much pain you continued.

“I always thought you're not like the rest of them. Not like any of them.”

You felt him going still when the words left your lips but you didn't stop what you were saying.

“And I love that you, everything of you. I love you when you're serious and when you're not. I love you more for your flaws and imperfections.” You took a deep breath as you stroked his cheeks comfortingly.

“Look at me”, you whispered it like a secret and waited until his eyes met yours before continuing. “I didn't fall in love with the perfect prince, Roberto, but with you, the real you. I still fall for you anew every time you smile, every time you cry and I always will. No matter what you do, Roberto, I'll fall in love with you, again and again.”

You've poured your heart and tears into the words hoping they would somehow lighten his heart and the past weighing him down. You couldn't deny the pain it caused you to see him in such a state but when you thought how he let's you see sides of him that no one else ever have, you only wanted to hold the man in front of you and never let go.

The man you've vowed yourself to. And the man who's vowed himself to you. No, not a prince, just a man.
