That day I hadn't a lot of appointments so I had promised Laura I'd join her with her friends for, well, whatever they were planning to do. I always end up accepting her invitations, not because I was fond of her or anything but that her father, Nicholson, held an important position in the politics and it kind of became my another way of entertaining the nobles. But I wasn't expecting that day to turn disastrous for me.
I was sitting on the back seat with Luke beside me as I was mulling over a woman I met a few days ago. She has been hired as the designer to the royal family and was doing her job fairly well that even I was surprised when Alma praised her. Yet that wasn't what my mind has been full of but her smart mouth.
I doubt she even thinks of me as a Prince to be throwing insults at me. I could never in my life forget the ball where I met her. Though all the princes voluntarily approached her, unlike with other noble women, she seemed to look at it like a distress rather than being interested in them.
When I asked her to dance she behaved the same way. Actually she out right rejected me which drew me towards her even more. She had a difficult aura and a stubborn streak, almost like a kid. She radiated innocence and purity but at the same time a strength, like that of a lioness. I fell for her wild and untouched nature that same night. All that designer interview was a ruse, to be honest.
As I was reminiscing, suddenly a face too familiar to me, in the past week flashed through the corner of my eyes but the limousine was too quick for me to double check. So I turned to Luke, who was intently checking my approval documents beside me.
“Did I just see someone there?” He looked visibly uncomfortable at my question before answering. That wasn’t like him at all.
“That one designer woman from before?” He shot me a question as his answer and having confirmed my suspicions I mumbled the word again, thinking back on that fleeting moment her face flashed through the corner of my eyes.
“Designer?”
“What is it, your highness?” He asked me as if it's an official discussion and I shook my head slowly.
“It's nothing.” As I turned towards the window, I saw my eyes looking back at me through the reflection in the window and they were actually smiling for once.
Laura, the actress and kind of a business friend to me, took me shopping of all the places along with her friends. I always loved attention, especially from women. So it wasn't a big deal that she and her friends were clinging to me now and again. But that day it somehow felt wrong to be in their company, to be holding them close to me. And it was.
After a while Laura was done with and within moments of her being outside the shop there was a commotion. When I entered the little circle of people around Laura, who was shouting for some reason, I froze. Literally.
The eyes looking back at me were shocked, mortified, nervous but steady. It was that girl, that designer. My hands, each resting on the waist of women either side of me felt like they were made of lead and I was filled with a strange sense of fear I've never known.
Yes, fear. If someone could be scared for their dear life in daylight, I was. My heart was racing and the words escaped me on their own.
“You-?”
She was still only staring at me and I couldn't avert my eyes either. It was like she was the only thing I could see and think. I had an urge to apologize to her for reasons I didn't know. Then instead she bowed, her face white as a sheet.
“Please forgive me.”
“Apologizing isn't going to fix my dress, now is it?” Laura yelled at her like she's lost a fortune.
