It was a fine sunny day, a rare occurrence in my country, Sanct Sybil- land of eternal winter. But as much as I long for the few short and warm days of summer and always awaited the colors of spring my favorite season has always been the winters. Not because I like the cold or anything, just that it has a warm memory associated with it.It was the day after a worst blizzard and I was walking back home from school. I was so happy that the Christmas holidays were starting the next day and I was practically dancing as I walked the snow covered streets. I was imagining all about the sweets and cakes we'll be having and all the songs we'd sing. It brought a bright smile to my face to think about the sweets.
As I was walking past a bakery I saw a beautiful blond boy, just my age, who had a longing look on his face reflected on the glass of the bakery. As I turned to look at him, his sea green eyes looked more dazzling than in the reflection. He was poking his head from inside a luxury car, eyes transfixed on the store. I approached him slowly and smiled.
“Hey, hello!” He turned to me with wide eyes but didn’t say anymore as he sat back inside.
“Um… Do you wanna go there?!”, I asked still smiling broadly peeping into the car with a bit of unease since I was a little too short. His cheeks colored and I giggled.
“No, I wasn't looking there.” He said stubbornly before turning away again.
“Hey, I'm going in there too. If you wanna join I'll share my cake with you.”
He turned to face me and after a moment got down the car carefully. He immediately tugged on my arm and started to run on the slippery snow. I felt it hard to keep up with his speed but it looked like he was running from someone and I giggled.
“Are you afraid of someone?”
“Silly, I don't have to be afraid of anyone.” He had a proud look as he said that only to make me laugh more.
“Hehe, you're so cute looking like that.”
“Hey…! Who’s cute…!” I felt something cold on my head and it turned out he dumped snow on me. I paid his deed manifold and started to run. He chased me down but just as he caught my hand we both tumbled in the front of the bakery and fell face flat onto the snow.
“Hehe, you're so funny”, he said as he clutched his stomach laughing. I just sat there in the snow staring at him as he laughed. It was so different from before when he looked so lonely and that it was like he's an angel now.
“Hey! What are you staring at? Come!” He waved his hands in front of my face and I shook my head to shake off the snow from my nose. He offered me his hand with a grin and pulled me up.
Once inside the bakery he looked all around with huge round eyes again and again. “What shall we get?”
“Uh… this is the first I've been to a place like this. So I have no idea. But everything looks delicious”, he was still looking around as he said this.
“You've never been to a bakery?” Nothing could have surprised me more.
“No. My father says I can't”, he whispered slowly the forlorn look back on his face.
“Why?”
He just shrugged and pointed to my favorite cake. “How about that?”
“Hehe, that's my favorite”, I shouted in joy as I bought one and we exited the store. I didn't have money to buy two cakes so I gave it to him. He looked from the cake to me in confusion.
“For you?”
“I eat this a lot. So you can have it”, I smiled broadly as I gave him the cake.
“No. I can't accept it if you won't share with me.” He shook his head stubbornly and crossed his arms. I thought of a way.
“Then, I'll give this cake as Christmas present. You can't say no.”
“But…”
“You really like it, isn't it? You can have it.”
“Thank you.” He accepted the cake with a happy smile and started to eat immediately. In moments he was finished and licked his fingers. There was cake on his face and I wiped it with my handkerchief.
“I'm not a child, you know?” He pouted at me but he still looked happy. Then he looked down and said slowly. “It was so much fun today, after that day. Thank you.” He looked like he might cry any minute but there was a smile on his face that could rival the sun.
“What is it?”, I asked him but he didn't answer. Instead he took the bracelet he was wearing and fastened it around my wrist. By then snow flakes have started to fall sparsely.“This is my Christmas gift. Take care of it, okay?”
“Hey, but won't your parents ask you about it?”
“My mother gave me this. But she's… she can't ask me now”, he smiled sadly at me.
“I'm sorry. But this is so important to you, I can't have it.”
“It is. So, take good care of it. I'm sure we can meet again.” He said so happily and before I could answer ran back towards the car waving at me. And in a few minutes the car flew by, with that boy.
After that I never saw him again and I didn't know if I'd ever. We didn't even exchange names but that that silent promise was still there, on my wrist where he'd put the bracelet reminding me we could meet again somewhere, sometime.
I touched a finger to the metal as it shone on the sun. The single gem caught the light from the dangling charm.
“Miss, here you are.” The florist extended the flowers I've ordered for visiting my grandmother's grave. I smelled the Snow crocus I held, the fragrance my grandmother loved so much.
“Thank you very much”, I smiled at her.
“You're wel- … Your highness?” She hurriedly bowed her head and just as I was about to turn I felt a hand take mine.
“Wha…? Oh, Prince Ivan?!” I bowed too, a bit uncomfortably because he was holding my hand. But he disregarded my confusion or my greeting as he raised my wrist to his face. He ran a finger over my bracelet and then looked up at my face.
“You? Do you remember?!”
I couldn't process what he was asking for a moment but then it dawned on me as I took another look at his face. The same blue green eyes staring back at me, the blonde hair swept to his left and the beautiful face of that little boy. I simply stood there staring at his handsome face until he cleared his throat.
A natural smile came to my lips and I nodded vigorously forgetting he's a prince. “Our Christmas gifts. Like I could ever forget.”
His expression dissolved from surprised to joy as his smile turned to one of fondness. “I did promise. I thought I was the only one.”
“You're not the only one.” He then tugged on my arm and started to pull me towards the bakery. He yet had to let go of my hand. I sneaked a peak of his face to catch him glancing at me as well and we both looked away again. Then he muttered.
“But… I always wanted ‘You as my Only One’”
My head snapped up to see the flushed face of the always poker faced prince I've seen on TV. He was staring at me and I squeezed his hand firmly as I returned his gaze. We then smiled at each other as we entered the store.
The place where we first met, now where our first date is.
