A submission for The Graphicon 2017.

Challenge: Typography - a book cover and quote graphic.

Process: The judges provided a selection of book titles and quotes, and I chose "She Will Rise" for the book title and "Their happiness was as infinite as the stars" for the quote graphic. Any genre could be used.

I wanted to create something entirely different, something that most people have never seen before. I skipped the swirls and fancy flourishes for the book cover, because those are easy.

I have never played with text the way I did here, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I knew the shattered appearance wouldn't look as good if it were 2D, so I played with shadows and multiple layers to achieve the 3-dimensional illusion. I also added lines to give the surfaces a cracked look.

Because I attempted A LOT of movement in this piece, I had to make sure the fragments of the letters "flew" in the same direction as the bullets. Hopefully it's convincing?

For the quote graphic challenge, I refused to use any premade font/typeface. (But there's nothing wrong with it, of course.) Instead, I handdrew the words and swirls and manually added shadows to create the 3D look.
