The Tree

~Life~

Tonight, the celebrations were beautiful. The sky was still painted the colour of fire as I stepped towards the tree, causing every branch to explode into lush emeralds and vibrant limes. I felt the weight of my position lift off my shoulders and slowly my feet began to move. The grass tickled my bare feet and I began to dance. I let my thoughts escape from my mind and for once I finally felt free, free from the immense responsibility that was always dragging me down.

When I eventually ran out of energy, I sat beneath the tree and watched the Sun fall down, making space for his Queen: the Moon. I was friends with the Sun once, he was hot but not attractive. We were only friends until he got what he wanted, the Moon. His balance.

Everyone has a balance, even the mortals. Its like their saying 'opposites attract' or something. Apparently that person will either be your soulmate, and I can't imagine who mine may be. Most deities' are obvious: the Sun and Moon, Light and Dark, Water and Fire. No one ever likes to consider who mine may be, they fear it is Death. I know it can't be, I met her once and she could never feel such emotions in her black heart.

I watch two doves fly around my tree together, and I begin to drift into a peaceful sleep...

~Death~

Today was a long day. I had to convince some young dude that it was not the end, and there was life after death because he did not want to move on. However, there cannot be Life after me, because it'd upset the scale. Life to Death to Life? It doesn't work.

Sometimes I wish that this wasn't me. That I could give the scythe to someone else and just let go of everything. Live a normal life, without looks of hatred and fear every time I come to collect what's owed.

I walk up the hill slowly, letting my long cloak drag along the floor, grass wilting and drying up beneath it. I tucked my wings behind me and lay under the tree, watching the branches shrivel and die. There were no animals here, except two ravens that followed me - crying out each time I took a life.

Silver brushstrokes decorated the navy sky, the moon creating dancing shadows in a gleaming light. I could sit here forever, gazing into the sky until I hear a noise. An adorable tiny snore from the other side of the tree. Life is here.

Immediately I stand up and walk away, holding my wings up high behind me - I never want to see life again. The horror in her face when we first met was too much to bare. I vanished.
