Chapter 1

Today was the day. The day of the infamous reaping. In district seven, people were gathering in front of the big stage were two glass bowls on pedestals were filled with names of the district teenagers. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third was getting dressed in his house when he heard someone enter. Soon, the mayor of district seven stood behind Hiccup, smiling proudly.
“My boy, you have grown into a fine young man.” Stoick said, looking at his son through the mirror. Hiccup nodded slowly and proceeded by putting on his light blue shirt, rolling up the sleeves and smiling.
“Better go get your girlfriend son, and don’t be late.” Hiccup nodded again, not really knowing what to say. Instead he smiled a crooked grin at his father, and ran out of the house to fetch Astrid. When he finally arrived he slowly knocked on the door and out rushed his girlfriend, smiling brightly when she noticed Hiccup standing on the porch. Hiccup kissed his girlfriends cheek, took her hand and led her towards the town center. Both of them were eighteen, so this was their last year.

They soon met up with the gang, that consisted of Hiccup, Astrid, a rather large eighteen year old boy named Fishlegs, another boy name Snotlout, who was Hiccup’s cousin, and then there was Ruffnut and Tuffnut, the twins. All of them were eighteen, and because this was their last year they had all planned to have a feast at Hiccup’s house after the reaping. That was, if none of them got chosen.

“Could I get your attention please?” Everyone turned around and looked at the stage where a woman  wearing a bright blue dress was standing in front of the microphone. The gang instantly recognized the woman as the eccentric Toothiana.
“Well, ladies first.” She picked a piece of paper and unfolded it.
“This year’s female tribute is... Astrid Hofferson!” Hiccup gasped as he heard his girlfriend’s name.
“Now for the men. This year’s male tribute is... Fishlegs Ingerman!” Before Fishlegs had the time to move Toothiana heard someone shout.
“I volunteer! I volunteer as male tribute!” Everyone in the crowd gasped, and soon Hiccup ran up on stager next to Toothiana.
“Well then. Here are the two tributes from district seven.” Hiccup tried to smile as everyone stared at him in awe.

Inside the Justice Building Hiccup was twiddling his thumbs. Soon his father entered the room, followed by the gang.
“We just visited Astrid. She looks pretty mad at you for risking your life.” Ruffnut said. Stoick enlaced Hiccup in a hug. He understood perfectly why his son had volunteered.
“Thanks for volunteering.” Fishlegs said, hugging his friend tightly. Before they left Stoick looked at his son for probably the last time.
“Try not to die son.” They left as quietly as they had come in. Soon, Astrid came into the room. Before she could do anything Hiccup kissed her. He was afraid that he wouldn’t make it in the Hunger games, but at least he would be able to try and protect Astrid while he could. Hiccup shook his head. Astrid didn’t need protecting. But at least he would be by her side. When he finally broke free he enlaced her in a warm hug, not willing to ever let go.

In another district, mainly district five, other children waited to be chosen for the hunger games. Only one teenager wasn’t scared. His name was Jackson Overland. He was standing alone, looking up at the stage. He wanted to be on the stage. Wanted people to see him, notice him. He looked over to where the girls were standing, looking for someone. He finally saw the red tangled hair of Merida DunBroch. They didn’t really like each other, but they both admired each other.  Both of them had a good chance of winning the hunger games, because both of them were highly trained in fighting. Merida was an excellent archer, and Jack was a good sword fighter. Of course, he had never had an actual sword, but he had used a staff during training with Aster Bunnymund, the only living male victor of district five. Aster hated to admit it, but Jackson could tell that Bunnymund was pretty impressed with his sword/staff fighting. But sword fighting wasn’t Jack’s only way of fighting. He had hidden it from everyone, but Jack had the power of manipulating ice and snow. He was powerful.
