a.n. hmm this chappie could’ve been better also... I have no personal grudge against sushi :)
Chapter 2.
Lunch was a nervous affair no matter what relaxing techniques I tried. The one where you breathe deep hold it for three beats then let it out, well it doesn’t work. Just makes you dizzy. And it must have looked funny because several times Mr. Lyken or Steve as he told me to call him asked me if I was alright.
Great impression I was making.
Steve had suggested that we take our lunch outside of the work building which was fine by me. I didn’t want to be seen eating with the boss in the downstairs cafeteria or stuck in his office. Neutral territory sounded fine.
We settled for Sushi which is pricy but… well he’s the boss. I’m not a big fan of sushi. The idea of raw fish just doesn’t do it for me although nowadays they’ll stuff it with almost anything and roll it. Steve led the first part of the conversation until I recovered my nerves and relaxed a little.
One thing though. I’m not sure he’s entirely straight anymore. When I fumbled with my chopsticks trying to shove my unraveling roll into my mouth I also managed to get rice mashed onto my chin. Not pretty. However I nearly jumped out of my chair when he reached across the table and used his thumb to wipe the rice of my face. I mean personal boundaries. You just don’t do that stuff in real life. I swear if he’d put his thumb up to my mouth expecting me to lick it off I might just have bit him. Boss or no boss.
So yeah I don’t think he’s straight and yet apart from that he kept his distance. There were no ‘accidental’ touches and the small talk was innocuous. It felt like a first date and I found myself enjoying it. If he hadn’t been my superior I would have considered taking it further. On a side note it has been way too long since I’ve had any action of the R rated variety.
As we were getting up to leave, my mobile rings. Checking the number first, it flashes Amy’s school.
Indicating to Steve still can’t get used to that, I say, “Sorry I need to get this.”
Turning away slightly I answer.
“Mr. Luxor.”
“Yes.”
“Hello this is Ms. Graham the vice-principal at Amy’s School. We’re sorry for the inconvenience but there’s been an incident at the school involving Amy and another student and if you’re at all available we need you to come down and pick her up.”
“What? What’s wrong has something happened to Amy?”
“Not at all Mr. Luxor. Amy is quite alright but the incident is rather of a sensitive nature and we will need to further discuss it with you, if you’re available?”
I looked over to Mr. Lyken, who was trying to pretend he couldn’t hear and said, “I’ll be there as soon as I can, about half an hour.”
“Thank you, Mr. Luxor, it’s appreciated. Please let the receptionists know when you arrive.”
I hung up the phone puzzled and worried. ‘Sensitive nature’ what on Earth could have happened in a couple of hours. Amy was five for Christ’s sake.
I look again at Steve. “I’m sorry Mr. Lyken but I need to leave. I have a family emergency.”
Having heard half of the conversation Steve nodded his assent. “No problem, understandable. I’ll notify and postpone your afternoon appointments. Hope everything is okay with Amy.”
