I have always lead a pretty ordinary life. I get good grades, I pride my self on not being confrontational, and I have the right amount of friends. So before when I called myself a dweeb, I didn't mean it as a bad thing. I meant it as a normal thing. Cause that is what I am... normal, boring, just another plain Jane. I know I'm not Gigi Hadid, but I'm not hideous either. I may be socially inept, but I'm wasn't a social pariah. I was not bullied, but I didn't stand out either. So you see, I wasn't a hopeless case yet. But today, all my normal-ness was going to go down the drain along with my chances of getting into a good university.
After two grueling hours of calculus and physics, and another bearable hour of lit, I would be lying if I said I wasn't exhausted. Music is the class I have before lunch, which is why I find it the most mentally draining class. During class Lucy and I have small staring contests with the clock.
"Only fifteen more minutes," I hear Lucy whisper to my left. A couple of minutes pass by while Mr. Lindström discusses renaissance composers , and how their music has influenced pop culture.
"Five," minutes, I whisper back. Then after a couple of minutes. "Five, four, three, two, one" I point towards the intercom, but nothing. I frown, Lucy watching me as I do, I don't get it the bell should have rung by now," well you little son of a ..."
RIIIIIIING
The sound of the bell drowns my voice in perfect timing, and I hear a muffled laugh to my left. "You always do that, dude," Lucy shakes her head disapprovingly, "It's not funny anymore."
"And yet you always laugh," I say, shoving my notebook into my bag and heading towards my locker. Lucy is one of my other friends. She keeps to herself like me, but unlike me, Lucy won't take other people's shit. If someone insults Lucy, they better be watching their backs.
Lucy used to be friends with Jenna, but their personalities clashed. As Jenna became more and more self-engrossed, Lucy gave less and less fucks, and now she's friends with me.
After we leave our books in our lockers we head out to the cafeteria. Looking around, I see Charlie sitting with Jenna and some other rich kids Jenna hang outs with. Charlie spots me, he shoots me a half-smile, and motions for me and Lucy to sit down, but I don't want to deal with Jenna's plastic, fake, barbie smile today, so I shake my head no. Charlie shrugs. I do have to give the boy some credit. Even though it was his association with Jenna that let him into The-Rich-Kids-of-Chesterville group, it was his funny personality that really charmed them.
I see my sister, and I'm about to go sit down with her, but she's with her boyfriend their other junior friends who I don't know. My social anxiety starts to kick in, so I turn the other way. Lucy and I end up going outside, picking a table near the lake. Today is cloudy so I don't mind sitting outside.
"You shouldn't be afraid of that bitch," Lucy rolls her eyes, as she starts to unwrap her tuna sandwich.
"Who?" I ask, and then try to divert the subject," dude, put that thing away, tuna smells."
"What do you want me to do," Lucy sights," Its the only damn thing my mom knows how to make. Now don't play dumb, and don't try to change the subject."
"Fine," I give up, "I don't know, I just don't want to start a fight today. She makes Charlie happy, and if he's happy, I'm happy. Besides, I've decided to turn a new leaf. If Jenna isn't bothering me, then I won't bother her. No matter how fake she is."
"Well how mature," Lucy mocks me. She starts plugging in her headphones, listening to some Oasis songs. "If it were me, I'd have her teeth knocked out by now."
"I'd rather not get suspended, thank you very much." Lucy doesn't respond already lost in her music. I pull out her headphones, and hand her over one of my tacos. "Don't tune me out if you want another one," I bribe her.
