The rain's icy claws took hold in my shoulders as it pounded down from above. Fuck this rain I thought as I went to grab my hair. It was completely ruined. All those hours blowing it out and straitening wasted. I felt its texture go back to its natural kinks and sighed in despair.
I took the last couple of steps into the building. Its familiar chemical smell from medicine and cleaner filled my nose. I could understand why the smell of hospitals freak people out, you know death and bodies and all, but it has always been comforting to me. To be able to walk in a and know that people are trying their best to save countless of lives.
It was freezing in the hospital and since my scrubs were soaked it was even colder. My hair was dripping wet and a big frizzy mess atop my head. I rummaged through my bag found a scrunchie and pulled it into a puff.
I took the familiar route to the intern section and clocked in. Yep I was late again, on any other circumstance where I was late, I would have ran to my station and begged for forgiveness, but since I was already fifty eight minuets late I decided to go all the way and shoot for a whole hour.
"Aaliyah, you're late, again." Dr. Marin stared at me in distain. "I know, I know Dr. Marin. I got caught in the rain and had to walk." "And?" he asked.
What the hell does he mean "and", my beautiful ass had to walk in the cold ass pouring rain just to get here and be and hour late. Not to mention the fact I'm probably going to get sick as fuck, and all he can say is and. Isn't he the damn doctor whose supposed to know how weather effects health.
"And" I continued, "I could probably get a cold from having to walk, so please don't harass me right now." I narrowed my eyes at him. "If it were up to me Aaliyah, you would have been fired on the first day".
Oh please that pathetic excuse of a man has hated my guts from the first second he met me. At the time he had no reason to, but he sure as hell does now. As if it isn't hard enough being the only black woman interning at a hospital; although, there are several black men as well, majority of the interns are white.
I turned my attention back to the half balding man in front of me, "Good thing its not then." I seethed and turned on a water soaked heel and walked away.
Since I was last to arrive the last chore was left to me. It was something all the interns hated doing, filing. I preferred to be on the ground dealing with patients families. But I was stuck here. It was no one else's fault but mine; other than mother nature of course. But who would side against me when it came to her.
I sighed and entered the pharmacy. When I said filing I meant sitting there reading bottles of medicine that are half used and putting them back in alphabetical order. Why is this a nuisance you ask? Because, I can't pronounce half the shit, and one little letter changes the whole pronunciation.
I sat and filed bottle after bottle, for what seemed like eternity. It wasn't until I looked at the clock on the wall to find that it was almost three, and as soon as I saw the time my stomach growled so loud I though it would wake the dead in the morgue. I swiftly got up and left the pharmacy.
I walked the familiar route to the cafeteria, I went to the sandwich shop to stop and talk to Ms. G. I skipped the line and went strait to the register, not planning on buying anything. The three people in line exclaimed in annoyance as greeted her.
"Hi, Ms. G" Her face lit up in the sight of me then turned into one of scolding. "Aaliyah, you know better than to cut all of these people", she said shaking her finger at me. "Relax I'm not going to by anything just came to stop by." "Even still child, these people don't know that, and I'm sure they have had a stressful day"
