It takes a few moments for Jack to register what the man in the baseball cap has said, but even then he still feels the need to check to see if there is some sort of problem with his ears. The radiator in the motel room was excruciatingly loud at all times of the day and night. Perhaps this was him losing his hearing along with his mind.
"You get paid to live in this fucking mansion?"
The dark eyebrows of the other man lift up in quiet amusement of the Irishman, and he nods as he takes a hold of Jack's slender shoulder. Giving it a quick squeeze, he pulls him gently towards the right into a small hallway of rooms. Jack passes by a door of the left with the name "Chase" written in blocked lettering and then a door to the right with the more gentle script of "Jameson".
It's at the end of the hall that they come to the only opened door, and Jack already feels more at ease when he enters it than he has in almost a month since his girlfriend left him. The room is a dark green color of paint, with a large window on the right hand side. There is no furniture in it except for a full sized bed, without sheets but looks miles more comfortable than what he is sleeping on now. His blue eyes then moves towards the bathroom door on the other side of the room, painted in a light and airy yellow.
"This is...this room is gorgeous," he gasp, and can hear Chase chuckle behind him. "It's just..if I had to..."
"Pick a room, this would be it?" Chase finishes.
Jack turns to look behind him at the youthful face of his temporary guide.
"Yeah, exactly."
The other man smiles, and motions for Jack back over towards the door that they came in, and they begin heading back down the narrow hallway. The house already seems brighter to the Irishman, and something deep within his heart feels light and airy. It's as if he has always belonged here, and has just been biding his time in the world until he had knocked in the bright blue door. From Jameson's room he hears a faint sound of a piano tune from yesteryear, and Jack is reminded of how his grandfather used to listen to similar songs back when he was still alive.
"If you like music of back in the day, then this is definitely the wing of the house for you," Chase assures. "Jameson loves all that kind of stuff. His room is full of silent film stars and black and white Hollywood photos."
Jack head turns a little bit to listen for as long as possible.
"He makes little silent films too," Chase continues. "They're really funny, and he loves to show them to anyone who's interested. Do you understand sign language, though? Jameson is mute."
Jack nods his head again as they get to the end of the hallway and back into the massive living room.
"I took a few classes in college," Jack admits.
Chase's smile grows.
"That's awesome, dude. You'll be perfect here. Schneep is out until late this evening, but if you're cool with waiting until tomorrow to sign all the paperwork, you can have the room."
Jack can't help but be pulled into the other man's excitement, and he can't help but think that this will work out in the end.The argument with the green haired man however, is still having him wonder what other surprises may occur if he stays.
"If you need more time to think about it, bro, I understand." Chase says, his tone very soft. "I get vibes off of people, and it seems like you've been dealing with a lot. If you ever need to talk about anything, the guys here are awesome about that. I still go to Robbie and Marvin whenever I'm stressing about my ex Stacey, and they give great advice."
The last part pulls at Jack's heart more than he realizes it, and he suddenly feels the weight of everything that he's been through. His sisters and brothers were always a phone call away, but it's been so long since he's had the chance to have people around him to help him with his problems.
"You have an ex too?"
Chase sighs and pulls off his baseball cap. It's only with this that Jack sees how boyish looking the man really is, and the way his crystal blue eyes hit the light so well.
"I'll take the room," Jack says in a rush, the need to make a decision the only thing in the front of his mind. "And the advice on exes, if you ever have the time to spare for it?"
Before Jack can clearly connect what's happening, he's getting the warmest hug that he's had in the longest of times. The way that Chase's perfect placement of his arms around his narrow shoulders and half empty heart presses in so deeply that tears start to fall.
"I always have time for my roomies, dude," Chase coos, allowing the Irishman to press his head into the side of his neck. "Just grab whatever stuff you have and head back over. The room is yours, and welcome home."
