Gabriel...
The light coming from the coloured window made shapes that danced on the wooden floor, even tho it was only 10 o' clock in the morning, the sun was shinning like never before. It had snowed on the night and a few clouds were still around in the sky but the wind chased away most of them, making the trees outside of the clinic rustle.
I was so entranced with the bright colours that I didn't noticed Nathaniel was calling me.
"What?" I said still looking at the floor.
"I knew it, Im not good enough for you to even pay me any attention. Fine, do whatever you want" He flipped his invisible long hair back and started walking away towards the door.
"Oh come on, don't be so dramatic, I was listening" I lied.
"Your lying...I can tell by your eyes" Damn!
I've been told that I slightly shift my eyes whenever I lie. But I was wearing glasses!
"Ok ok, what is it?" Now I was paying attention, it's so hard when your best friend doesn't get to the point.
"Fine" He slided into the seat in front of me and started rambling again "As I was saying, me and my brother wanted to go to the 'Night Light Festival' with some girls, but since we volunteered to help with a food stand, we were wondering if YOU could take our place...knowing you had nothing to do...Im pretty sure you'll have tons of fun!"he smiled.
"I knew something was cooking, I was wondering when it was gonna happen...wait what?" I ask "Are you kidding me? Im the only doctor in town, my job is to be there just in case there's an emergency, plus, you were the one's that volunteered!" I can't beleive they're going to ditch there responsabilities just to hang out with some girls.
"Please! Im sure nothing's gonna happen, and if you want to, we can work till eight and let you take control from there on"
Since the festival starts at six, what they're offering me is a pure joke, but I knew they were looking forward for the event, in fact, they never stopped talking about it until a few days ago, I figures something was gonna happen, especially something that involded me but, I never thought it was for something like this!
"That's not fair and you know it Nathaniel" I crossed my arms in front of me and leaned back in my seat. If he wanted me to cooperate, he needed something better than that.
"Fine, how about..." he stared in to the blankness and started mumbling something "how about we help you repaint the clinic!"
"Done!" I jumped from my seat and slammed my hand with his. I really needed some help with the clinic, repainting it was only one thing, but doing it alone was hard enough.
"Great! Well then, I'll tell Chris that you agreed"
After that, we continued talking about what I had to do on the food stall. Apparently it was a popcorn and candy apple stall, the job was easy and all but still, I was supposed to look out for medical emergencys but, I coulndn't back down now. Im not like them anyways.
"well then, I'm sure you'll do the job just right and um...see you at 7 o clock"
"WHAT?!" I stand up so fast I got dizzy and sit up almost instantly with a hand on my forehead "Say what now?"
"Come on man, we need at least a little bit of help before the festival" he looked at me with pleading eyes. As if that facade will work on me.
"But you have Chris to help you"
"Yeah but still, it's a lot of work" something feels off about this...
I glared at him demanding the real deal to all of this "Truth or no deal" I declared.
"Isn't it 'trick or treat'?
" Nathaniel!" Why can't you just hate your best friends? Either way, I was getting tired of this game and the growing headache was making it worse.
"Fine! The girls have a stall of their own and we said we'd help them out, so...we need the extra help we can get..." he wasn't looking at me, that means he's not lying. Knowing him my entire life, he was also guilty for not telling me sooner.
I sighed and took off my glasses, it's been a while since I last went outside of my little clinic, always going from my house to work and the other way around, always going to town once in a couple of weeks and of course, if I didn't make it clear enough, single for a very, very long time. Though that didn't bother me at all, unlike my friends, who worrie for me.
"Fine, I'll be there at 7,but you and Chris owe me big" I glared at him trying to make a point and like always, it worked.
"I know" he smiled and turned around towards the door "By the way, will you bring someone to the festival?"
"I highly doubt it"
"Thought so...well then, see you later" and just like that, he was gone.
I really didn't mind looking after their stall, and I'm pretty sure they knew that.
Once again I let myself be hypnotized by the dancing lights and shades on my wooden floor. I was sure this year was any different from the past ones on the festival, nothing bad ever happened, just a few kids getting hurt from falling down, stomach aches here and there, but nothing bad enough so basically I just waited in a chair on the far corner of the festival with nothing but my medical stuff and me.
"As if this year will be any different..."
